SYNOPSIS. The thyroid system in endothermic birds and mammals as well as ectothermic teleost fish is profoundly sensitive at several levels to acute and chronic alterations in the quality and quantity of ingested food. Predominant amongst the thyroid changes is a consistent alteration in peripheral T3, production due to regulation of hepatic T4 5′-monodeiodinase activity, which causes decreased T3 blood levels in caloric- (mainly carbohydrate) deficient states.
