}Welfare improvements for nonhuman animals should aim to satisfy the needs of visitors as well as those of the animals. Little research has been conducted, however, and existing work is confined to zoos in developed countries. This article reports the behavioral responses of Chinese visitors to environmental enrichment improvements in a zoo enclosure. Visit, viewing, and stopping behaviors significantly increased at the transformed exhibit, indicating that it provoked greater visitor interest…

Zoo Visitor Attitudes Are More Influenced by Animal Behaviour than Environmental Enrichment Appearance
- PsychologyAnimals : an open access journal from MDPI
- 2021
A questionnaire to assess zoo visitor attitudes towards enrichment appearance in an outdoor walk-through enclosure for ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) suggests that the appearance of the items did not have an effect on visitor attitudes and that visitors recognised both naturalistic and artificial items as enriching for the animals.

Does an Animal–Visitor Interactive Experience Drive Conservation Action?
- BiologyJournal of Zoological and Botanical Gardens

The results can be used to guide AVIs in zoos which aim to connect people with nature and drive pro-conservation behaviour in visitors and the use of enrichment during AVIs may be a positive link between the visitor experience and animal welfare.

Oxytocin increased significantly and cortisol decreased during visits to the zoo, and post-visit oxytocin levels were lower for park visits than zoo visits, which indicated that visiting a zoo or aquarium might be good for older people's health.
Zoo visitors’ perceptions of chimpanzee welfare are not affected by the provision of artificial environmental enrichment devices in a naturalistic exhibit
- Psychology, Biology
- 2017
Results support previous research that zoo visitors are not affected by EED aesthetic in a naturalistic exhibit, perhaps because the naturalism of the exhibit supersedes any effect or because the EEDs represent such small elements within the exhibit.

Investigation of whether or not a group of zoo chimpanzees responded to environmental enrichment differently given higher weekend crowds in contrast to lower weekday crowds showed that foraging, feeding, and object-using were more likely with new enrichment; conversely, grooming, playing, watch-idle, and aberrant behaviors were morelikely with 1 day-old enrichment.
