We consider a scalable user-centric wireless network with dynamic cluster formation as defined by Björnsson and Sanguinetti. Several options for scalable uplink (UL) processing are examined including: i) cluster size and SNR threshold criterion for cluster formation; ii) UL pilot dimension; iii) local detection and global (per cluster) combining. We use a simple model for the channel vector spatial correlation, which captures the fact that the propagation between UEs and RRHs is not isotropic…

Fairness Scheduling in Dense User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks

This work proposes to reduce the number of active UEs per time slot, such that the system does not operate at “full load”, and impose throughput fairness among all users via a scheduler designed to maximize a suitably defined concave componentwise non-decreasing network utility function.

Massive MIMO Pilot Decontamination and Channel Interpolation via Wideband Sparse Channel Estimation

A low-complexity algorithm that uses the received UL wideband pilot snapshots in an observation window comprising several coherence blocks (CBs) to obtain an estimate of the angle-delay power spread function (PSF) of the received signal and proposes an effective low- complexity approximation/implementation of this smoothing filter.

Making Cell-Free Massive MIMO Competitive With MMSE Processing and Centralized Implementation

It turns out that it is possible to outperform conventional Cellular Massive MIMO and small cell networks by a wide margin, but only using global or local minimum mean-square error (MMSE) combining, in sharp contrast to the existing literature, which advocates for maximum-ratio combining.

Foundations of User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO

Joint Spatial Division and Multiplexing—The Large-Scale Array Regime

JSDM achieves significant savings both in the downlink training and in the CSIT uplink feedback, thus making the use of large antenna arrays at the base station potentially suitable also for frequency division duplexing systems, for which uplink/downlink channel reciprocity cannot be exploited.

Cell-Free Massive MIMO Versus Small Cells

Under uncorrelated shadow fading conditions, the cell-free scheme provides nearly fivefold improvement in 95%-likely per-user throughput over the small-cell scheme, and tenfold improvement when shadow fading is correlated.
