This research deals with the philosophical thoughts in literary text and aims at identifying the ideas of existentialism in the novel The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway with reference to Sartre's existentialism. Based on the analysis, it was found that this novel contained ideas of existentialism proposed by Sartre, that is, anxiety, alienation and despair.
