Signaling cascades during adipogenesis culminate in the expression of two essential adipogenic factors, PPARgamma and C/EBPalpha. Here we demonstrate that the IRE1alpha-XBP1 pathway, the most conserved branch of the unfolded protein response (UPR), is indispensable for adipogenesis.
