The Chinese theory has five agents (yun}--earth, metal, water, wood, and fire and six qualities (ch 'i}---cold, hot, dry, wet, windy, and fiery. The Westerners are said to have four elements-earth, water, air, and fire-and four qualities-dry, wet, hot and cold. Since we know nothing further of the Western theory, we can not judge its truth, but it seems to be of the same sort as the Chinese theory. It may be that the Chinese theory is more detailed than the Westem. 14
