Context. NGC 3311, the central galaxy of the Hydra I cluster, shows signatures of recent infall of satellite galaxies from the cluster environment. Previous work has shown that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the stars and globular clusters in the extended halo of NGC 3311 rises up to the value of the cluster velocity dispersion. In the context of Jeans models, a massive dark halo with a large core is needed to explain this finding. However, position dependent long-slit measurements…

The Hydra I cluster core - I. Stellar populations in the cD galaxy NGC 3311

Context. The history of the mass assembly of brightest cluster galaxies may be studied by mapping the stellar populations at large radial distances from the galaxy centre, where the dynamical times

Dust and star formation in the centre of NGC 3311

Context. NGC 3311 is the central galaxy of the Hydra I galaxy cluster. It has a hot interstellar medium and hosts a central dust lane with emission lines. These dust lanes are frequent in elliptical

The first detection of ultra-diffuse galaxies in the Hydra I cluster from the VEGAS survey

In this paper, we report the discovery of 27 low-surface brightness galaxies, of which 12 are candidates for ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDG) in the Hydra I cluster, based on deep observations taken as

The Fornax Deep Survey with the VST. VIII. Connecting the accretion history with the cluster density

This work is based on deep multi-band (g, r, i) data from the Fornax Deep Survey with VST. We analyse the surface brightness profiles of the 19 bright ETGs inside the virial radius of the Fornax

Detection of Intracluster Globular Clusters in the First JWST Images of the Gravitational Lens Cluster SMACS J0723.3–7327 at z = 0.39

We present a survey of globular clusters (GCs) in the massive gravitational lens cluster SMACS J0723.3–7327 at z = 0.39 based on the early released JWST/NIRCam images. In the color–magnitude diagrams

Kinematics of the diffuse intragroup and intracluster light in groups and clusters of galaxies in the local universe within 100 Mpc distance

Nearly all intragroup (IGL) and intracluster light (ICL) comes from stars that are not bound to any single galaxy but were formed in galaxies and later unbound from them. In this review we focus on

A preserved high-z compact progenitor in the heart of NGC 3311 revealed with MUSE 2D stellar population analysis

Context. Massive early-type galaxies are believed to be the end result of an extended mass accretion history. The stars formed in situ very early on in the initial phase of the mass assembly might

Dynamical masses of brightest cluster galaxies I: stellar velocity anisotropy and mass-to-light ratios

We investigate the stellar and dynamical mass profiles in the centres of 25 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at redshifts of 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.30. Our spectroscopy enables us to robustly measure the

Clocking the formation of today’s largest galaxies: wide field integral spectroscopy of brightest cluster galaxies and their surroundings

The formation and evolution of local brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) is investigated by determining the stellar populations and dynamics from the galaxy core, through the outskirts and into the

What does (not) drive the variation of the low-mass end of the stellar initial mass function of early-type galaxies

Context. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) seems to be variable and not universal, contrary to what has been argued in the literature over the last three decades. Several relations of the

The dark halo of the Hydra I galaxy cluster: core, cusp, cosmological? Dynamics of NGC 3311 and its globular cluster system

Context. Some galaxy clusters exhibit shallow or even cored dark matter density profiles in their central regions rather than the predicted steep or cuspy profiles, conflicting with the standard

Sloshing in its cD halo: MUSE kinematics of the central galaxy NGC 3311 in the Hydra I cluster

Context. Early-type galaxies (ETGs) show a strong size evolution with redshift. This evolution is explained by fast “in-situ” star formation at high- z followed by a late mass assembly mostly driven

The dynamically hot stellar halo around NGC 3311: a small cluster-dominated central galaxy ,

Context. An important open question is the relation between intracluster light and the halos of central galaxies in galaxy clusters. Aims. Here we report results from an on going project with the aim

The Hydra I cluster core - I. Stellar populations in the cD galaxy NGC 3311

Context. The history of the mass assembly of brightest cluster galaxies may be studied by mapping the stellar populations at large radial distances from the galaxy centre, where the dynamical times

Dynamics of the NGC 4636 globular cluster system - An extremely dark matter dominated galaxy?

Context. We present the first dynamical study of the globular cluster s ystem of NGC 4636. It is the southernmost giant elliptical galaxy of the Virgo cluster, and is claimed to be extremely dark

Deep optical observations of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 1413

Aims. We investigate the morphology and dynamics of the massive nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1413. Methods. Using wide field imaging and spectroscopic data obtained from observations at the

The unmixed kinematics and origins of diffuse stellar light in the core of the Hydra I cluster (Abell 1060)

Context. Diffuse intracluster light (ICL) and cD galaxy halos are believed to stem from galaxy evolution and disruption in clusters. Aims. The processes involved may be constrained by studying the

Stellar population and the origin of intra-cluster stars around brightest cluster galaxies: the case of NGC 3311

Context. We investigate the stellar population and the origin of diffuse light around brightest cluster galaxies. Aims. We study the stellar population of the dynamically hot stellar halo of NGC

A large population of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Hydra I cluster ?

Aims. We performed a large spectroscopic survey of compact, unresolved objects in the core of the Hydra I galaxy cluster (Abell 1060), with the aim of identifying ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs)

Determination of the Dark Matter Profile of A2199 from Integrated Starlight

We have obtained deep, long-slit spectroscopy along the major axis of NGC 6166, the cD galaxy in the cluster A2199, in order to measure the kinematics of intracluster stars at large radii. The
