We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS images and color-magnitude diagrams for 24 nearby galaxies in and near the constellation of Centaurus with radial velocities VLG < 550 km s-1. Distances are determined based on the luminosities of stars at the tip of the red giant branch that range from 3.0 to 6.5 Mpc. The galaxies are concentrated in two spatially separated groups around Cen A (NGC 5128) and M83 (NGC 5236). The Cen A group itself has a mean distance of 3.76 ± 0.05 Mpc, a velocity…
The observed infall of galaxies towards the Virgo cluster
We examine the velocity field of galaxies around the Virgo cluster induced by its overdensity. We have studied the velocity-distance relation in Virgocentric coordinates using a sample of 1792
Infall of Nearby Galaxies into the Virgo Cluster as Traced with Hubble Space Telescope
We measured the tip of the red giant branch distances to nine galaxies in the direction to the Virgo cluster using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. These distances put
The Faint End of the Centaurus A Satellite Luminosity Function
The Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS) is constructing a wide-field map of the resolved stellar populations in the extended halos of these two nearby, prominent galaxies. We
The M101 Satellite Luminosity Function and the Halo–Halo Scatter among Local Volume Hosts
We have obtained deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of 19 dwarf galaxy candidates in the vicinity of M101. Advanced Camera for Surveys HST photometry for 2 of these objects showed resolved
LABOCA observations of nearby, active galaxies
We present large scale 870 μm maps of the nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 4945 as well as the nearest giant elliptical radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) obtained with the newly
The missing dwarf galaxies of the Local Group
We study the Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxy population predicted by the APOSTLE ΛCDM cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. These indicate that: (i) the total mass within 3 Mpc of the Milky
Nuclei of dwarf spheroidal galaxies KKs 3 and ESO 269−66 and their counterparts in our Galaxy
We present the analysis of medium-resolution spectra obtained at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) for nuclear globular clusters (GCs) in two dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). The galaxies
THE CENTRAL REGION OF THE NEARBY SEYFERT 2 GALAXY NGC 4945: A PAIR OF SPIRALS
NGC 4945 is a Seyfert 2 galaxy at a distance of 3.82 Mpc. Its relative proximity has permitted a detailed Submillimeter Array study of the circumnuclear molecular gas in a galaxy exhibiting an active
The Lost Dwarfs of Centaurus A and the Formation of its Dark Globular Clusters
We present theoretical constraints for the formation of the newly discovered dark star clusters (DSCs) with high mass-to-light (M/L) ratios, from Taylor et al (2015). These compact stellar systems
A close look at the Centaurus A group of galaxies III. Recent star formation histories of late-type dwarfs around M83
We study the resolved stellar populations of dwarf galaxies in the nearby Centaurus A/M83 group of galaxies. Our goal is to characterize their evolutionary history and to investigate eventual

ADVANCED CAMERA FOR SURVEYS IMAGING OF 25 GALAXIES IN NEARBY GROUPS AND IN THE FIELD
We present Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images and color-magnitude diagrams for 25 nearby galaxies with radial velocities VLG < 500 km s-1. Distances are determined based on the
THE CENTAURUS GROUP AND THE OUTER HALO OF NGC 5128: ARE THEY DYNAMICALLY CONNECTED?
NGC 5128, a giant elliptical galaxy only ~4 Mpc away, is the dominant member of a galaxy group of over 80 probable members. The Centaurus group provides an excellent sample for a kinematic comparison
Distances to nearby galaxies around IC 342
We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of six nearby galaxies in the projected vicinity of IC 342: Cas dSph, KK 35, UGCA 86, Cam A, NGC 1560, and Cam B. We derive distances to
A Catalog of Neighboring Galaxies
We present an all-sky catalog of 451 nearby galaxies, each having an individual distance estimate D 10 Mpc or a radial velocity VLG -17.0, which contribute about 4% to the local luminosity density,
Masses of the local group and of the M81 group estimated from distortions in the local velocity field
Based on high precision measurements of the distances to nearby galaxies with the Hubble telescope, we have determined the radii of the zero velocity spheres for the local group, R0 = 0.96±0.03Mpc,

Over the last few years, rapid progress has been made in distance measurements for nearby galaxies based on the magnitude of stars on the tip of the red giant branch. Current CCD surveys with the
The distance to the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128
The distance to NGC 5128, the central galaxy of the Centaurus group and the nearest giant elliptical to us, has been determined using two independent distance indicators: the Mira period-luminosity
