We present late-time imaging and spectroscopic observations of the optical transient (OT) and host galaxy of GRB 970508. Imaging observations roughly 200 and 300 days after the burst provide unambiguous evidence for the flattening of the light curve. The spectroscopic observations reveal two persistent features that we identify with [O II] ?3727 and [Ne III] ?3869 at a redshift of z=0.835?the same redshift as the absorption system seen when the transient was bright. The OT was coincident with…

Observations of the field of GRB~970508 made in early August 1998, 454 days after outburst, with the STIS CCD camera onboard the Hubble Space Telescope clearly reveal the presence of a galaxy which was obscured in earlier HST images by emission from the optical transient (OT).

The host of the short gamma-ray burst (GRB) 050709 is a morphologically disturbed low-luminous galaxy. At a redshift of z = 0.16, it belongs to one of the cosmologically nearest short-GRB hosts…
The Late Afterglow and Host Galaxy of GRB 990712.

The HST images and EFOSC2 spectra indicate that the gamma-ray burst was located in a bright, extended feature (possibly a star-forming region) 1.4 kpc from the nucleus of a 0.2L*B galaxy at z=0.434, possibly a Seyfert 2 galaxy, and the late-time afterglow and host galaxy of GRB 990712 bear some resemblance to those ofGRB 970508.

It follows that the dimmest known bursts have z, 6, much above the value usually quoted and beyond the most distant quasars, which means either that GRBs are caused by a much rarer phenomenon than mergers of binary neutron stars, or that their gamma-ray emission is often invisible to us due to beaming.
