Many bacterial endosymbionts have been recorded in natural populations of different ciliates. However, it is possible to keep only some of them as infected stockcultures under laboratory conditions and then investigate these bacteria more precisely. However, large part of morphological descriptions for ciliate endosymbionts was made in the last quarter of XX c. Thus, these data cannot be compared with more modern discoveries as reliable molecular methods have been introduced in order to study… Expand

“Candidatus Mystax nordicus” Aggregates with Mitochondria of Its Host, the Ciliate Paramecium nephridiatum
TLDR
The striking peculiarity of this endosymbiont was its ability to form aggregates with the host mitochondria, which distinguishes it from Holospora and Holosporales-like bacteria inhabiting paramecia. Expand
“Candidatus Gortzia shahrazadis”, a Novel Endosymbiont of Paramecium multimicronucleatum and a Revision of the Biogeographical Distribution of Holospora-Like Bacteria
TLDR
A novel species belonging to the “Ca. Gortzia” genus, detected in P. multimicronucleatum, a ciliate for which infection by an HLB has not been reported, discovered in India is described. Expand
The Hidden World of Rickettsiales Symbionts: “Candidatus Spectririckettsia obscura,” a Novel Bacterium Found in Brazilian and Indian Paramecium caudatum
TLDR
This work characterized the Rickettsiales symbionts associated with two different genotypes of the freshwater ciliate Paramecium caudatum originated from freshwater environments in distant geographical areas and were assigned to a new species of a novel genus, namely “Candidatus Spectririckettsia obscura. Diversity of Endosymbiotic Bacteria in Paramecium
TLDR
An endonuclear symbiont of Paramecium, Holospora obtusa, may be the closest relative of mitochondria known to date and stimulate research in different fields, such as microbiology, cell biology, physiology, ecology, and phylogenetics. Expand
Bacterial endocytobionts of Ciliophora. Diversity and some interactions with the host
TLDR
The results support a suggestion about food selection in this ciliate and some possible ways of experimentally increasing the diversity of endonuclear bacteria in P. multimicronucleatum were demonstrated. Expand
Prokaryotic Symbionts of Ciliates
TLDR
Accounts of early observations of bacteria in protozoa that followed this initial period were reviewed by Kirby (1941), Wichterman (1953), and Ball (1969). Expand

TLDR
In this review extensive material concerning the variety of endocytobionts, their categories, and their interaction with host cells is presented. Expand
Spirostomum spp. (Ciliophora, Protista), a suitable system for endocytobiosis research
TLDR
It is shown that members of the genus Spirostomum may also serve as a suitable system for endocytobiosis research. Expand

TLDR
Heterotrichs and oligohymenophoreans are the most promising groups of Ciliophora for the investigation of symbiosis. Expand
Endosymbionts in paramecium.
TLDR
It is found that an 89-kDa periplasmic protein has an important function for Holospora's invasion into the target nucleus, and thatHolospora alters the host gene expression; the host thereby acquires resistance against various stresses. Expand
Diversity of Holospora Bacteria in Paramecium and Their Characterization
TLDR
The complex life cycle of Holospora bacteria and their host and nuclear specificity suggest that there is a system of diverse interactions with the host both at the stage of infection and during infection maintenance in the nuclei. Expand
Diversity and geographic distribution of ciliates (Protista: Ciliophora)
TLDR
The data indicate that ciliate biogeography is similar to that of plants and animals, but with an increased proportion of cosmopolites, favouring the moderate endemicity model. Expand
Characterization of "Candidatus Nebulobacter yamunensis" from the cytoplasm of Euplotes aediculatus (Ciliophora, Spirotrichea) and emended description of the family Francisellaceae.
TLDR
This work characterized a novel Francisella-related bacterium inside the rich prokaryotic community harbored by a population of Euplotes aediculatus (Ciliophora, Spirotrichea), and classified it in a new taxon for which the name "Candidatus Nebulobacter yamunensis" is proposed. Expand
