A star of mass M and radiusr 0 is supposed to start radiating at timet 0. The zone of radiation extends tor=r 1 at a later instantt=t 1. The energy tensor for the radiation zone, describing the directed flow of radiation, is evaluated and a relativistic line-element representing the field of radiation forr 0 ⩽r ⩽r 1 and correspondingt 0 ⩽t ⩽t 1 is obtained.
