This report presents some studies of the gauge/string theory correspondence, a deep relation that is possible to establish between quantum field theories with local gauge symmetry and superstring theories including gravity. In its original version, known as AdS/CFT duality, the correspondence involves N = 4 Super Yang–Mills theory in four space-time dimensions, which is a superconformal theory with a high degree of supersymmetry, thus very far from describing the physical world. We explore…

Topics in gauge/gravity dualities

This thesis consists in a self-contained study of gauge/gravity dualities in the line of the KlebanovWitten model. Here we explore first the known Maldacena duality that relates N = 4 SYM theory in

Gauge invariant perturbation theory and non-critical string models of Yang-Mills theories

We carry out a gauge invariant analysis of certain perturbations of D − 2-branes solutions of low energy string theories. We get generically a system of second order coupled differential equations,

Gauge/string duality in confining theories

This is the content of a set of lectures given at the “XIII Jorge André Swieca Summer School on Particles and Fields”, Campos do Jordão, Brazil in January 2005. They intend to be a basic introduction

Supersymmetric solutions of supergravity from wrapped branes

We consider several solutions of supergravity with reduced supersymmetry which are related to wrapped branes, and elaborate on their geometrical and physical interpretation. The Killing spinors are

2 The Gravity Dual of N = 1 Super Yang-Mills

We study non perturbative superpotentials for N = 1 Super Yang Mills from the point of view of large N dualities. Starting with open topological strings we work out the relation between the closed

2 Topological Strings Amplitudes and N = 1 Superpo-tentials 2 . 1 F-Terms and Topological Amplitudes : Closed String Case

We study non perturbative superpotentials for N = 1 super Yang Mills from the point of view of large N dualities. Starting with open topological strings we work out the relation between the closed

Wilson loops stability in the gauge/string correspondence

We study the stability of some classical string worldsheet solutions employed for computing the potential energy between two static fundamental quarks in confining and non-confining gravity duals. We

Getting = 1 super Yang-Mills from strings

In the context of the gauge-string correspondence, we discuss the spontaneous partial breaking of supersymmetry. Starting from the orbifold of S5, supersymmetry breaking leads us to consider the

Four Lectures On The Gauge/Gravity Correspondence

We review in a pedagogical manner some of the efforts aimed at extending the gauge/gravity correspondence to nonconformal supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. After giving a general

Gauge theories from wrapped and fractional branes

Lecture 5 D-Branes on the Conifold and N = 1 Gauge/Gravity Dualities

We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity dualities with N = 1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes at

Fractional D-branes and their gauge duals

We study the classical geometry associated to fractional D3-branes of type IIB string theory on 42 which provide the gravitational dual for = 2 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. As one can

Seiberg Duality for Quiver Gauge Theories

A popular way to study N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theories is to realize them geometrically in string theory, as suspended brane constructions, D-branes wrapping cycles in Calabi-Yau manifolds,
