I present an overview of the Galactic binaries that form the foreground for the ESA/NASA Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The currently known population is discussed, as well as current and near-future large-scale surveys that will find new systems. The astrophysics that can be done when the LISA data becomes available is presented, with particular attention to verification binaries, the overall Galactic populations, neutron star and black hole binaries and sources in globular…

Gravitational-wave Emission from Compact Galactic Binaries
Compact Galactic binaries where at least one member is a white dwarf (WD) or neutron star constitute the majority of individually detectable sources for future low-frequency space-based
Constraining parameters of white-dwarf binaries using gravitational-wave and electromagnetic observations
The space-based gravitational wave (GW) detector, evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (eLISA) is expected to observe millions of compact Galactic binaries that populate our Milky Way. GW
The lisa gravitational wave foreground: A study of double white dwarfs
Double white dwarfs are expected to be a source of confusion-limited noise for the future gravitational wave observatory LISA. In a specific frequency range, this ‘foreground noise’ is predicted to
Fundamental physics and cosmology with LISA
In this paper, we briefly review some of the applications to fundamental physics and cosmology of the observations that will be made with the future space-based gravitational wave (GW) detector LISA.
Gravitational wave astronomy
We are entering a new era of gravitational-wave astronomy. The ground-based interferometers have reached their initial design sensitivity in the audio band. Several upper limits have been set for
Prospects for observing ultracompact binaries with space-based gravitational wave interferometers and optical telescopes
ABSTRACT Space-based gravitational wave interferometers are sensitive to the galactic population ofultracompact binaries. An important subset of the ultracompact binary population are thosestars that
Low-frequency gravitational-wave science with eLISA/NGO
We review the expected science performance of the New Gravitational-Wave Observatory (NGO, a.k.a. eLISA), a mission under study by the European Space Agency for launch in the early 2020s. eLISA will
Using electromagnetic observations to aid gravitational-wave parameter estimation of compact binaries observed with LISA: II. The effect of knowing the sky position
In this follow-up paper, we continue our study of the e ect of using knowledge from electromagnetic observations in the gravitational wave (GW) data analysis of Galactic binaries that are predicted
We use multi-epoch spectroscopy of ~4000 white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to constrain the properties of the Galactic population of binary white dwarf systems and calculate their merger
Sample of LMXBs in the Galactic bulge – I. Optical and near‐infrared constraints from the Virtual Observatory
We report on the archival optical and near-infrared observations of six low-mass X-ray binaries situated in the Galactic bulge. We process several recent Chandra and XMM-Newton as well as Einstein

Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers
We report here the preliminary results obtained with the multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) system at the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST/NSO MCAO) and the optical setup and performances are presented
