The Chechen people, which comprised approximately four hundred thousand, was one of the largest national communities forcibly relocated from the North Caucasus. The neighboring Ingush, who numbered upward of ninety thousand and belonged to the same language family as the Chechens (the Vainakh linguistic group), were also caught up in the special settlement movement.
