Basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors control various aspects of the formation of the nervous system in the metazoans. In Drosophila some bHLH (such as the achaete-scuteatonal, and amos genes) act as proneural genes, directing ectodermal cells toward a neural fate.
