This paper concerns some connections between convex analysis. network flows and marrnid theory. Let K be an arbitrary subspace of R', where R is the real number system. Regarding K as a chain group in the sense of Tutte, one can pass to the corresponding matroid. Combinatorial facts deduced from general matroid theory may then be reinterpreted in terms of the original vectors in K.
