PREJUDICES and uncertainties have constantly obstructed scholars who have tried to estimate the effects of the Thirty Years' War on Germany. There is still little agreement about the state of the German economy during the half-century before 1618, and even less about the economic effects of the war. There has been a long controversy surrounding this problem, and a great deal of evidence has been uncovered. This article outlines the main features and results of the dispute.
