In spite of the reduced level of experimental control, this large scale study brought some clarity into the relation between mental rotation task (MRT) performance and a number of variables where contradictory associations had previously been reported in the literature. Clear sex differences in MRT were observed for a sample of 134,317 men and 120,783 women, with men outperforming women. There were also MRT differences as a function of sexual orientation: heterosexual men performed better than… Expand
Gender and Sexual Orientation Differences in Cognition Across Adulthood: Age Is Kinder to Women than to Men Regardless of Sexual Orientation
TLDR
At least for these particular tests from young adulthood to retirement, age is kinder to women than to men, but treats heterosexuals, bisexuals, and homosexuals just the same. Expand
Male sexual orientation, gender nonconformity, and neural activity during mental rotations: an fMRI study
TLDR
The results suggest that gay men should not be studied as a homogenous group and cross-sex shifts may be associated with underlying developmental factors which are associated with sexual orientation (such as gender nonconformity). Expand
Sexual Orientation and Cognitive Ability: A Multivariate Meta-Analytic Follow-Up
TLDR
Results support the cross-sex shift hypothesis which predicts that homosexual men perform in the direction of heterosexual women in sex differentiated cognitive domains, but the type of task and cognitive domain tested is critical. Expand
Sexual orientation and neurocognitive ability: A meta-analysis in men and women
TLDR
The cross‐sex‐shift hypothesis predicts that homosexual men and women will be similar in certain neurobehavioral traits to their opposite‐sex counterparts and should perform in the direction of heterosexual women and homosexual women on neurocognitive tests that show normative sex differences. Expand
Digit ratio (2D:4D), dominance, reproductive success, asymmetry, and sociosexuality in the BBC Internet Study
  • J. Manning, B. Fink
  • Biology, Medicine
  • American journal of human biology : the official journal of the Human Biology Council
  • 2008
TLDR
The BBC Internet Study of sex differences in which finger lengths were self‐measured shows sexual dimorphism, ethnic differences and higherDimorphism of right 2D:4D than left, thereby indicating that 2D-4D does measure real between‐participant variation. Expand
Is Digit Ratio (2D:4D) Related to Masculinity and Femininity? Evidence from the BBC Internet Study
Research on association between digit ratio (2D:4D; a putative correlate of prenatal sex steroids) and mental masculinity/femininity (Masc/Fem) has reported mixed findings. This may be due toExpand
Mental rotation task performance in relation to sexual and gender diversity in Thailand
TLDR
Overall, support for neurohormonal theory was limited among AFAB individuals, but MRT performance among AMAB individuals was consistent with organizational effects, with straight cis men outperforming gay cis men and sao praphet song. Expand
Effects of Sex and Sexual Orientation on Self-Reported Attraction and Viewing Times to Images of Men and Women: Testing for Category Specificity
  • R. Lippa

  • Archives of sexual behavior
  • 2012
TLDR
The results showed that homosexual men were high on category specificity, like heterosexual men, whereas lesbians showed lower levels of category specificity than men, but sometimes higher levels than heterosexual women. Expand
Visuospatial Performance on an Internet Line Judgment Task and Potential Hormonal Markers: Sex, Sexual Orientation, and 2D:4D
TLDR
Results support a prenatal sex hormone hypothesis that degree of androgen exposure may influence the neural circuitry underlying cognition (visuospatial ability) and sexual orientation as well as aspects of somatic development. Expand
Preference for Male Facial Masculinity as a Function of Mental Rotation Ability in Gay and Bisexual Men, but Not in Heterosexual Men and Women in China
  • L. Zheng
  • Psychology, Medicine
  • Front. Psychol.
  • 2019
TLDR
The results revealed that mental rotation ability was significantly associated with preference for masculinized faces in both gay and bisexual men, and imply homogamy in partner preference in gay andisexual men in terms of masculinity. Expand

The results yielded some evidence confirming prior findings that non-right-handedness is associated with homosexuality in men and women, that older brothers increase the odds of homosexuals in men, and that the effect of older brothers on sexual orientation is limited to right-handed men. Expand
Digit Ratio (2D:4D) in Homosexual and Heterosexual Men from Austria
TLDR
No significant difference is found between means for homosexual and heterosexual 2D:4D, with values for both falling between 0.96 to 0.97, and it is concluded that more data are required to clarify whether or not there is a 2D-4D effect for sexual orientation in men. Expand
