BACKGROUND: For anesthesia or conscious sedation of patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures in computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans, an extension of infusion lines for continuous drug delivery of anesthetics or vasopressors is often necessary. In this study, we tried to determine if the length of the infusion line influenced the time until an alarm sounded after occlusion at the end of the infusion line. METHODS: We connected 2 infusion pump systems of the…
Multi-infusion with integrated multiple pressure sensing allows earlier detection of line occlusions
TLDR
In single pumps, both the regression and SD algorithm considerably reduced alarm delay compared to conventional pressure limit-based detection and for multiple pumps the correlation algorithm reliably detected co-occlusions.
Arrangements of the intravenous parallel infusions with anti-reflux valves decreasing occlusion alarm delay
TLDR
The infusion setup of faster infusion rate, lower compliant system using ASV could effectively decrease occlusion alarm delay during multiple intravenous parallel infusions using ARV.
Efficacy evaluation of syringe pump developed for continuous drug infusion
TLDR
The efficacy testing of the newly developed syringe pump showed the accuracy to be within tolerance, and it is believed that this pump is suitable for clinical use.
Changing the syringe pump: A challenging procedure in critically ill patients
TLDR
The syringe change can be a very critical moment given different influencing variables, and the presence of a neutral displacement needle-free connector reduces the incidence of boluses.
Incidence and Causes of Infusion Alarms in a Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Prospective Pilot Study.
TLDR
Alarms from infusion pumps were frequent in the NICU/PICU setting, a quarter of them resulting from line occlusion, and drug incompatibilities were identified as a potential cause for occlusions in this pilot study.
Smart syringe pumps for drug infusion during dental intravenous sedation
TLDR
Smart syringe pumps allow clinicians to perform effective sedation by using a computer to control the dose of the drug being infused, and patient-controlled infusion, which allows a patient to control his/her level of sedation through self-infusion, has been developed.
Analysis of Physiological Respiratory Variable Alarm Alerts Among Laboring Women Receiving Remifentanil
TLDR
The majority of women receiving IV remifentanil for labor analgesia experienced apneas, and all variables had a low positive predictive rate, demonstrating the limitations of the respiratory monitors utilized as early warning surveillance for apnea in this setting.
Strategies for Managing Smart Pump Alarm and Alert Fatigue: A Narrative Review
TLDR
More research is needed related to managing occlusion and air‐in‐line alarms, especially for complicated infusions, and future work should focus on the evaluation of specific and replicable alert and alarm reduction strategies with a greater emphasis on quantitative metrics.

Impact of infusion line compliance on syringe pump performance
TLDR
Occlusion times correlated strongly to the calculated estimated compliance of the syringe‐infusion line assembly (Pearson's r=0.998, P < 0.0001). Infusion line compliance has an important impact on time to occlusion, particularly when using small, low compliant infusion pump syringes.
Flow rate, syringe size and architecture are critical to start-up performance of syringe pumps.
TLDR
The highest possible flow rate, smaller sized syringes and syringe plungers with reduced compressibility should be preferred in order to avoid significant start-up delays in fluid delivery.
Syringe size and flow rate affect drug delivery from syringe pumps
TLDR
Conclusions: Vertical displacement of syringe pumps causes flow irregularities which correlate directly with syringe size and indirectly with infusion rate, and extreme vertical maneuvering of Syringe pumps should be avoided.
The effect of syringe size on the performance of an infusion pump
TLDR
The use of a larger size syringe was found not to affect the accuracy of infusate delivery, but delayed the time to occlusion alarm and increased the size of the postocclusion bolus dose.
[Anesthesia outside the core operating area].
TLDR
The number of diagnostic and surgical procedures being performed outside the core operating area is growing disproportionately and anesthesia should only be provided by a very experienced anesthesiologist, even for supposedly small interventions, which should be reduced to a minimum.
Probleme bei der Infusion vasoaktiver Pharmaka
TLDR
For safe infusion of vasoactive drugs the following conditions are highly recommended: a singular syringe pump, a high volume delivery at a low drug concentration, a pressure-controlled infusion device and a short and pressure-resistant infusion system.

TLDR
Nonoperating-room anesthesia will play a central role in anesthesia practice in the future and should be a high priority for anesthesiology departments to ensure delivery of the highest quality of patient care in a cost-effective and organized manner.
Syringe pumps take too long to give occlusion alarm
Background:  The aim of this study was to assess the time needed to trigger an occlusion alarm, and the influence of the type of infusion pump, type and size of the syringe, and the set infusion rate.
