Red palm oil (RPO) has been investigated for preventing or alleviating vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Previous data has offered inconclusive and inconsistent results about the effects of RPO in patients with VAD. Our objective was to undertake a meta-analysis to assess the effects of RPO in preventing VAD in the population. After conducting a comprehensive literature search, nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Overall, when trial results were pooled, the results indicated that…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Pediatric Age Palm Oil Consumption
TLDR
It was showed that palm oil represents a significant source of saturated fatty acids, to which scientific evidence attributes negative health effects when used in excess, especially with regards to cardiovascular diseases.
Red palm olein supplementation on cytokines, endothelial function and lipid profile in centrally overweight individuals: a randomised controlled trial
TLDR
Red palm olein did not improve subclinical inflammation and endothelial function despite profound increase in antioxidant levels, and the positive improvement in oxidised LDL merits further attention in this group of subjects at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Red Palm Oil: A Review on Processing, Health Benefits and Its Application in Food.
This review is aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the physicochemical properties and extraction processes of red palm oil, its nutritional properties and applications in food. Crude palm
Processing of Olein Fraction Red Palm Oil with Minimal Refining Method and Optimization of Deodorization Process
Red Palm Olein (RPOn) is the result of refining and fraction of Crude Palm Oil (CPO). In the conventional refining of CPO, carotene which is a pro-Vitamin A is intentionally removed to get a clear
Substituição do óleo de palma na produção industrial de alimentos
Due to its technological characteristics, palm oil has allowed the substitution of partially hydrogenated fats, that contain trans fatty acids, in the industrial production of food, being currently
Pharmacognostic Screening of Elaeis guineensis ( Aracaceae) Jacq. Oil and its Effect as an Antidote on Cyanide Poisoning
TLDR
Elaeis guineensis oil has counteracting effect on cyanide poisoning if administered within four minutes of cyanide ingestion, and shows the absence of death on the group given oil extract alone and the groups that were poisoned and given the oil (antidote) within 4 minutes.
Effect of Oils in Feed on the Production Performance and Egg Quality of Laying Hens
TLDR
The practical application of different types and qualities of oils in poultry diets and the critical effects of these oils on production performance, such as the egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and various egg quality parameters, including the albumen height, Haugh units, yolk color, and saturated/unsaturated fatty acids are discussed.
Development of methods for determining free fatty acid contents in red colored oils
TLDR
Gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and high-performance liquid Chromatography-evaporative light scattering detector (HPLC-ELSD) methods were developed to determine acid value in 3 buah merah oils and 1 red palm oil by measuring free fatty acid contents and showed accurate and reliable results.
Micronutrients and many important factors that affect the physiological functions of toll-like receptors
TLDR
This review gives a brief idea on TLR family and attempts to cover the factors affecting the physiological functions of them, including micronutrients.

Impact of beta-carotene supplementation through red palm.
TLDR
RPO is acceptable to children as an edible grade oil as there is no perceptible difference in the consumption pattern between experimental and control children.
Moving from Efficacy to Effectiveness: Red Palm Oil's Role in Preventing Vitamin A Deficiency
TLDR
Red palm oil is highly efficacious in improving vitamin A status among populations at risk of vitamin A deficiency and the time has come to move beyond trials of biological efficacy and focus on conducting operational research projects, effectiveness trials, and cost-benefit analyses that will help expand the use of red palm oil in areas where it is likely to be well accepted but remains underutilized.
The positive impact of red palm oil in school meals on vitamin A status: study in Burkina Faso
TLDR
RPO given regularly in small amounts appears highly effective in the reduction of VA deficiency and deserves more attention as a food supplement for VA and as a potential source of rural income in Sahelian countries.
Red palm oil supplementation: a feasible diet-based approach to improve the vitamin A status of pregnant women and their infants.
TLDR
Red palm oil, a rich source of bioavailable vitamin A, could be used as a diet-based approach for improving vitamin A status in pregnancy and reduced the prevalence of maternal anemia.
Comparison of the effects of supplemental red palm oil and sunflower oil on maternal vitamin A status.
TLDR
Consumption of red palm oil increases concentrations of alpha- and beta-carotene in both breast milk and serum and maintains breast-milk retinol concentrations.
A place for palm fruit oil to eliminate vitamin A deficiency.

TLDR
Red palm fruit oil has a highly bioconvertible form of alpha- and beta-carotene, a long shelf life, and a higher cost/benefit ratio when compared to other approaches such as high-dose-vitamin A supplements and fortification of foods with retinyl ester fortificants.
The protective effect of red palm oil in comparison with massive vitamin A dose in combating vitamin A deficiency in Orissa, India.
TLDR
Among both the levels of RPO supplement, 8g RPO was as efficient as was a massive vitamin A dose in providing protection for three months, after cessation of supplementation.
South African Experience with the Use of Red Palm Oil to Improve the Vitamin A Status of Primary Schoolchildren
TLDR
Red palm oil is ideally suited for use as a source of β-carotene in food fortification in the baking industry because of its high carotenoid and vitamin E contents.
A Comparison of Retinyl Palmitate and Red Palm Oil β-Carotene as Strategies to Address Vitamin A Deficiency
TLDR
RPO should only be used as a source of Vitamin A if it is produced and used in its crude form and regularly consumed without frying, and refined RPO should be fortified with retinyl palmitate, not β-carotene, to ensure that there is adequate Vitamin A content.
The effect of a biscuit with red palm oil as a source of β-carotene on the vitamin A status of primary school children: a comparison with β-carotene from a synthetic source in a randomised controlled trial
TLDR
A biscuit with red palm oil as a source of β-carotene is as effective as a biscuit in improving the vitamin A status of primary school children and an excellent alternative fortificant for addressing vitamin A deficiency.
