Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common inflammatory disease. Methotrexate (MTX) is the most important drug for RA treatment; it acts as anti inflammatory drug by increasing adenosine level. Adenosine receptor antagonists reduce the anti inflammatory effect of MTX. Tea is a popular drink in Iraq contain large amount of caffeine, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of tea consumption on the response to MTX in RA patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Baghdad Teaching Hospital… Expand

Modulation of methotrexate efficacy by green tea polyphenols in rat adjuvant arthritis
It is suggested that long-term administration of GS may inhibit the therapeutic action of methotrexate in arthritic rats, suggesting a pro-oxidant effect. Expand

Dietary caffeine intake does not affect methotrexate efficacy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Caffeine intake among patients taking high doses of MTX for RA did not affectMTX efficacy and RA disease activity over time, and there was no statistical difference in MTX efficacy between groups. Expand
An update on methotrexate
Methotrexate was shown to improve signs and symptoms of RA, disease activity and function, to a similar degree as the tumor necrosis factor blockers, and it inhibits radiographic progression to a smaller degree than the antitumor Necrosis factor agents. Expand
Current and future role of methotrexate in the therapeutic armamentarium for rheumatoid arthritis
Methotrexate seems to be one of the safest DMARDs, while there is evidence that patients treated with MTX have lower mortality, especially due to cardiovascular causes. Expand
Methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis. A five-year prospective multicenter study.
This large prospective study of long-term MTX treatment demonstrates sustained clinical response and improvement in the Westergren ESR and functional assessment scores, with an acceptable toxicity profile. Expand
Predictors of response to methotrexate in early DMARD naïve rheumatoid arthritis: results from the initial open-label phase of the SWEFOT trial
Current smoking, female sex, longer symptom duration, cigarette smoking habits, autoantibody status, Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) score, concurrent prednisolone and treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs predict a worse response to MTX in patients with new-onset RA. Expand
Low-Dose Methotrexate: A Mainstay in the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis
The mechanism of action of methotrexate, originally developed as a folate antagonist for the treatment of cancer, and its role in the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis are reviewed. Expand
Anti-inflammatory mechanisms of methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis
Several lines of evidence clearly suggest that MTX does not act simply as a cytotoxic (antiproliferative) agent for the cells responsible for the joint inflammation in RA. Expand
Reversal of the antiinflammatory effects of methotrexate by the nonselective adenosine receptor antagonists theophylline and caffeine: evidence that the antiinflammatory effects of methotrexate are mediated via multiple adenosine receptors in rat adjuvant arthritis.
There is strong evidence that adenosine mediates the antiinflammatory effects of MTX in this model of RA, and the findings suggest that abstinence from caffeine, a ubiquitous food additive and medication, may enhance the therapeutic effects ofMTX in RA. Expand

In this study, swollen joint count was the variable with the greatest weight, which explains the observed better performance of SDAI. Expand
Extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis.
It may well be that certain asthmatics develop an idiosyncrasy to isoprenaline rather than a dosedependent effect on a hypoxic myoiardium in severe airways obstruction, and because of the apparently innocuous or moderate airways-obstruction present in many astHmatics shortly before an unexpected death.
