In 1971, the legal drinking age in Ontario was lowered from 21 to 18. There were divergent opinions respecting the desirability and effects of this change. Some felt that the former age restrictions exerted a moderating influence on consumption among the young and reduced the likelihood of the early development of alcohol-related problems.
