We report on the first observations of variations in UV (intrinsic EUV 330 A) flux of the luminous QSO HS 1700+6416 (z=2.72) over a decade. The amplitude of variations increases from +/-0.1 mag in the optical (R) to up to a factor of 3 at 1250 A. This is apparently an extension of the increase in amplitude of variations towards shorter wavelengths observed with IUE in low z AGN (Paltani & Courvoisier, 1996) to the EUV. The time-scale for variations with the largest amplitudes is >= 1/2 yr to… Expand

Fluctuations of the intergalactic UV background towards two lines of sight
Aims. We present a reanalysis of the He II Lyα absorption towards the quasars HS 1700+6416 and HE 2347-4342 using new high S/N, optical observations. Methods. An alternative analysis method isExpand
The UV spectrum of HS 1700+6416 - II. FUSE observations of the He II Lyman alpha forest
Aims. We present the far-UV spectrum of the quasar HS 1700+6416 taken with FUSE. This QSO provides the second line of sight with the He ii absorption resolved into a Lyα forest structure. Since HSExpand
The UV spectrum of HS 1700+6416. I. Predicting the metal line content of the far UV spectrum
Aims. In preparation of a study of the $\ion{He}{ii}$/$\ion{H}{i}$ ratio towards the bright QSO HS 1700+6416, we predict the metal line content of the far-UV spectral range by modelling 18 metalExpand
Spatial fluctuations in the spectral shape of the ultraviolet background at 2 > z > 3 and the reionization of helium
The low-density hydrogen and helium in the intergalactic medium (IGM) probed by quasi- stellar object (QSO) absorption lines is sensitive to the amplitude and spectral shape of the metagalacticExpand
SDSS J1138+3517: A quasar showing remarkably variable broad absorption lines
We report on the highly variable Si iv and C iv broad absorption lines in SDSS J113831.4+351725.2 across four observational epochs. Using the Si iv doublet components, we find that the blue componentExpand
The reionization epoch of singly ionized helium (He II) is believed to start at redshifts z {approx} 3.5-4 and be nearly complete by z {approx_equal} 2.7. We explore the post-reionization epoch withExpand
Exploratory X-ray monitoring of luminous radio-quiet quasars at high redshift: Initial results
We present initial results from an exploratory X-ray monitoring project of two groups of comparably luminous radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). The first consists of four sources at 4.10 ≤ z ≤ 4.35,Expand
Reverberation Mapping of High-Luminosity Quasars: First Results
Reverberation mapping of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has led to estimates of broad-line region (BLR) sizes and central object masses for some 37 objects to date. However, successfulExpand
Energy distribution of individual quasars from far-ultraviolet to X-rays. I. intrinsic ultraviolet hardness and dust opacities
Using Chandra and HST archival data, we have studied the individual SED of 11 quasars at redshifts 0.3 < z < 1.8. All UV spectra show a spectral break around 1100 ?. Five X-ray spectra showed theExpand

Simultaneous EUVE/ASCA/RXTE Observations of NGC 5548
We present simultaneous observations by EUVE, ASCA, and RXTE of the type?1 Seyfert galaxy NGC?5548. These data indicate that variations in the EUV emission (at ~0.2 keV) appear to lead similarExpand
The Variability and Spectrum of NGC 5548 in the Extreme Ultraviolet
We have measured the light curve and spectrum of NGC 5548 obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) during a period when the galaxy was also intensively monitored with the Hubble SpaceExpand
A Composite Extreme-Ultraviolet QSO Spectrum from FUSE
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has surveyed a large sample (>100) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the low-redshift universe (z 0.33 formed from archival Hubble Space TelescopeExpand
The Fluctuating Intergalactic Radiation Field at Redshifts z = 2.3-2.9 from He II and H I Absorption toward HE 2347–4342
We provide an in-depth analysis of the He II and H I absorption in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshifts z = 2.3-2.9 toward HE 2347-4342, using spectra from the Far Ultraviolet SpectroscopicExpand
We use a sample of 332 Hubble Space Telescope spectra of 184 quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) with z > 0.33 to study the typical ultraviolet spectral properties of QSOs, with emphasis on the ionizingExpand
Resolving the Structure of Ionized Helium in the Intergalactic Medium with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer
The presence of He ii Lyα absorbers with no H icounterparts indicates that structure is present even in low-density regions, consistent with theoretical predictions of structure formation through gravitational instability. Expand
The O/C abundance ratio in absorbing gas clouds at high redshift
THE intrinsic extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of quasars, in which spectral lines of He and CNO ions should appear, is in most cases strongly absorbed by the hydrogen Lyman continuum ofExpand
A Composite Extreme Ultraviolet QSO Spectrum from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has surveyed a large sample (>100) of active galactic nuclei in the low-redshift universe (z<1). Its response at short wavelengths makes it possibleExpand
