We present the results from a study of the dynamics of the system of globular clusters around M87. After eliminating foreground galactic stars and background galaxies, we end up with a sample of 205 bona fide M87 globular clusters for which we have radial velocities determined from multislit spectra taken with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck Telescope. We find that the mean radial velocity of the M87 globular clusters agrees well with that of M87 itself and that the velocity…

The Globular Cluster System of NGC 1399. II. Kinematics of a Large Sample of Globular Clusters

We study the kinematics and dynamics of the globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the brightest elliptical galaxy near the center of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. The observational data consists of

Spectroscopy of Globular Clusters in NGC 4472

Optical multislit spectra have been obtained for 47 globular clusters surrounding the brightest Virgo elliptical galaxy, NGC 4472 (M49). Including data from the literature, we analyze velocities for

We present the first spectroscopic study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy (gE) M86 in the Virgo Cluster. Using spectra obtained in the Multi-Object Spectroscopy mode of

Dynamics of Stars and Globular Clusters in M87

We examine the dynamics of the stars and globular clusters in the nearby giant elliptical galaxy M87 and constrain the mass distribution, using all the available data over a large range of radii,

Dynamics of the Globular Cluster System Associated with M49 (NGC 4472): Cluster Orbital Properties and the Distribution of Dark Matter

Using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the Keck I and II telescopes, we have measured radial velocities for 196 globular clusters (GCs) around M49 (NGC 4472), the brightest member of the

The Globular Cluster System of M60 (NGC 4649). I. Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope MOS Spectroscopy and Database*

We present radial velocity measurements for globular clusters in M60, a giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Target globular cluster candidates were selected using Washington photometry

M87, Globular Clusters, and Galactic Winds: Issues in Giant Galaxy Formation

We have used the high-resolution camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to obtain VRI photometry of the globular clusters in the innermost 140″ of the M87 halo. The results are used to discuss

The Orbital Structure and Potential of NGC 1399

Accurate and radially extended stellar kinematic data reaching R = 97″ from the center are presented for the cD galaxy of Fornax NGC 1399. The stellar rotation is small (≤30 km s-1); the stellar

Dynamics of the Globular Cluster System Associated with M87 (NGC 4486). II. Analysis

We present a dynamical analysis of the globular cluster system associated with M87 (=NGC 4486), the cD galaxy near the dynamical center of the Virgo Cluster. The analysis utilizes a new spectroscopic

The Globular Cluster System of M60 (NGC 4649). II. Kinematics of the Globular Cluster System

We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system in the giant elliptical galaxy (gE) M60 in the Virgo Cluster, using a photometric and spectroscopic database of 121 GCs (83 blue

Spectroscopy of globular clusters in M87 and M49

Optical multislit spectra of globular clusters in two giant elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster indicate average metal abundances of one-sixth and one-tenth solar composition for M49 and M87,

Spectroscopy of the Globular Clusters in M87

With a velocity dispersion of 370 + or - 50 km/sec the globular cluster system of M87 is kinematically hotter than the stars in the giant elliptical itself. This is consistent with the clusters'

Globular clusters in galaxies beyond the local group. V. The giant ellipticals reconsidered.

The large-scale spatial structures of the globular cluster halo systems around the giant ellipticals M87 and M49 in Virgo, and NGC 3311 in Hydra I, are analyzed following a revision of the previously

The distribution of dark matter in the halo of M87

We investigate the constraints that can be placed on the distribution of dark matter around M87 using the 43 globular cluster velocities reported by Mould et al. [AJ, 99, 1823 (1990)]. If the

The stellar dynamics of omega centauri.

The stellar dynamics of Omega Centauri are inferred from the radial velocities of 469 stars measured with CORAVEL (Mayor et al. 1997). Rather than fit the data to a family of models, we generate

Abstract : Neutral hydrogen studies of the five Scd galaxies M33, NGC 2403, IC342, M101 and NGC6946 have revealed substantial similarities in their hydrogen distributions and rotation curves. It is

Globular cluster systems of the three Virgo ellipticals

The globular-cluster systems (GCSs) around NGC 4406, NGC 4472, and NGC 4486 are characterized on the basis of published observational data obtained with the 5-m Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory

The dark matter distribution of M87 and NGC 1399

Recent X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies indicate that, outside the innermost about 100 kpc region, the ratio of dark matter density to baryonic matter density declines with radius. We show

Studies of the Virgo cluster. VI. Morphological and kinematical structure of the Virgo cluster

The structure of the Virgo cluster is analyzed on the basis of the positions, Hubble types, and radial velocities of 1277 Virgo cluster galaxies. The surface distribution of galaxies is considered

Extragalactic Globular Clusters. III. Metallicity Comparisons and Anomalies

Using a method based on the strengths of six absorption line indices measured in integrated spectra, we have derived metallicities for 22 globular clusters associated with the Sc galaxy, M33, 10
