Using spectroscopic parallax, the heliocentric and Galactocentric distances of nearly all of the 157 known Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galaxy were determined. Their distribution both within and perpendicular to the Galactic plane was investigated. The overall distribution within the plane reveals spiral features which are in accord with other determinations of Galactic structure. In addition, it was found that the Galactocentric location of Wolf-Rayet stars is dependent on Wolf-Rayet subtype, with…

The Galactic distribution of Wolf-Rayet stars: an optical and infrared approach

. The recent VIlth Catalogue of Galactic Wolf.Rayet Stars (van der Hucht 2001), lists 227 PopulationI WR stars, comprising 127 WN, 87 WC, 10 WN /WC and 3 WO stars. Additional discoveries since then

The Interstellar Environment of the Wolf-Rayet Star WR 143

As part of a systematic study of the environment of Galactic WR stars, a region along the line of sight to Cygnus (l = 77.5°, b = 0°) has been studied. The neutral hydrogen 21 cm line distribution

Stellar Population Studies with the SDSS. I. The Vertical Distribution of Stars in the Milky Way

We present star count data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for 5.8 × 105 stars brighter than g' = 21 mag over 279 deg2 in two samples north and south of the Galactic plane. Using these

A Survey of Nebulae around Galactic Wolf-Rayet Stars in the Southern Sky. III. Survey Completion and Conclusions

We present the conclusion of a narrow-band optical CCD survey of Wolf-Rayet stars in the southern portion of the Milky Way. In this part of the survey we complete our survey of the southern Galaxy

VLT/FORS Surveys of Wolf-Rayet Stars in the Nearby Universe

Abstract We present results from a series of VLT/FORS narrow-band imaging and spectroscopic surveys of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in nearby spiral galaxies and compare observed populations in high- and

Searching for hidden Wolf–Rayet stars in the Galactic plane – 15 new Wolf–Rayet stars

We report the discovery of 15 previously unknown Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars found as part of an infrared (IR) broad-band study of candidate WR stars in the Galaxy. We have derived an empirically based

A NEAR-INFRARED SURVEY OF THE INNER GALACTIC PLANE FOR WOLF–RAYET STARS. I. METHODS AND FIRST RESULTS: 41 NEW WR STARS

The discovery of new Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars in our Galaxy via large-scale narrowband optical surveys has been severely limited by dust extinction. Recent improvements in infrared technology have made

Statistical study of OB stars in NGC 6334 and NGC 6357

Context. Star-forming complexes are large structures exhibiting massive star-formation at different stages of evolution, from dense cores to well-developed H ii regions. They are very interesting for

A NEAR-INFRARED SURVEY OF THE INNER GALACTIC PLANE FOR WOLF-RAYET STARS. II. GOING FAINTER: 71 MORE NEW W-R STARS

We are continuing a J, K and narrowband imaging survey of 300 deg2 of the plane of the Galaxy, searching for new Wolf–Rayet (W-R) stars. Our survey spans 150° in Galactic longitude and reaches 1°

A Deep Survey for Galactic Wolf-Rayet Stars. II. Implications for Galactic Structure and Massive Star Formation

We have completed a direct narrowband-broadband Schmidt plate survey of large areas of the southern Milky Way for new Wolf-Rayet (W-R) stars as faint as 19th b magnitude. The 31 newly detected stars
