To the Editor.— I address two issues that the article by Wells et al 1 raises: the detection of depression and the systems of health care. Wells et al found that the system of financing medical care had little relationship to the detection of depression. I commend their use of questionnaires to detect emotional problems, for two reasons: first, questionnaires are effective, efficient, and reliable in alerting patient and physician to problems.
