The Darwin-Bateman Paradigm in Historical Context1
@inproceedings{Dewsbury2005TheDP, title={The Darwin-Bateman Paradigm in Historical Context1}, author={Donald A. Dewsbury}, booktitle={Integrative and comparative biology}, year={2005} }
Abstract I introduce the term “Darwin-Bateman Paradigm” to include several proposals stemming from the writings of Charles Darwin and A. J. Bateman, including the notions that (a) male reproductive success is more variable than that of females, (b) males gain more in reproductive success from repeated matings than do females, and (c) males are generally eager to mate and relatively indiscriminate whereas females are more discriminating and less eager. I trace this paradigm from Darwin's The…

This introduction to the symposium concludes by emphasizing the heuristic value of Bateman's contributions, as well as the problems that arise whenBateman's paradigm is viewed through the lens of modern behavioral ecology and evolutionary theory.
Female sexual selection in light of the Darwin–Bateman paradigm
- Psychology, Biology
- 2011
This review supports the intent of this review to bring forth sexual selection in females but has some objections that relate to the definition used and that the review is restricted by some of the Darwin--Bateman paradigm's notions that are clearly gender biased.
Conflict in context : a critique and investigation into the logic, nature, and evolutionary consequences of competition in animals.

This work addresses some of the problems associated with the conventional logic of competition, and proposes an alternative perspective, which may help to dissolve the inconsistencies embedded in the current logic.
Sexual Selection: The Logical Imperative
- Biology, Psychology
- 2015
The principles of modern sexual selection theory are outlined and their heuristic value discussed, and it is proposed that a sequence of evolutionary events flows inevitably from the early evolution of sexual recombination and gametes, to anisogamy and in dioecious organisms, to the unity sex ratio via Fisher’s principle.
Darwinian sex roles confirmed across the animal kingdom
- Psychology, BiologyScience Advances
- 2016
It is demonstrated that, across the animal kingdom, sexual selection is indeed stronger in males than in females and that it is evolutionarily tied to sex biases in parental care and sexual dimorphism.
A REAPPRAISAL OF BATEMAN'S CLASSIC STUDY OF INTRASEXUAL SELECTION
- BiologyEvolution; international journal of organic evolution
- 2007
Bateman's results are unreliable, his conclusions are questionable, and his observed variances are similar to those expected under random mating, according to a reanalysis of his study of Drosophila melanogaster.
Rethinking Bateman’s Principles: Challenging Persistent Myths of Sexually Reluctant Females and Promiscuous Males
- BiologyJournal of sex research
- 2016
Angus Bateman’s conclusions and predictions have become axiomatic and, at times, have gone unquestioned even when modern empirical data do not conform to this model, and the origins and history of these ideas are reviewed.
Darwin on race, gender, and culture.
- PsychologyThe American psychologist

The way in which race, gender, and culture were represented and explained by Darwin and the ways in which his observations and opinions on gender and race were taken up by others and, more often than not, misapplied are considered.

Epigamic selection includes the major part of what Darwin meant by sexual selection, and is introduced to apply to characters which increased the fertility of a given mating and therefore had a selective value for the species as a whole.
