The aim of this paper is to show the potentiality of the historical analysis mixed with the experimental data elaboration in identifying the mechanical behavior of an ancient monument. Firstly, an ideal route through the crack pattern of Santa Maria del Fiore dome in Florence is presented herein: the conclusion of the historical debates about the mechanical behavior of the dome are analyzed in light of the statistical interpretation of the last 55years cracks monitoring data. The recall of some…

Results of a 60-Year Monitoring System for Santa Maria del Fiore Dome in Florence

This study aims to present the results of the historical and statistical analysis carried out on the monitoring systems that control one of the most studied domes in the world: Santa Maria del Fiore

Dome Strengthening By Encircling Ties: A Monitored Experiment

This study describes a new strategy of conservation of historical monuments based on the combined use of monitoring analysis and empiric reappraisal. Over time, the mechanical behavior of domes—their

Brunelleschi’s Dome: A New Estimate of the Thrust and Stresses in the Underlying Piers

: The paper deals with the insurgence of the thrust, together with its valuation, in masonry domes, giving special attention to the Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence. After a recalling of the

Synergistic and Interdisciplinary Approaches for the Conservation of Monumental Heritage: Cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy

AbstractThis paper presents the results of an interdisciplinary study carried out on Brunelleschi’s Cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy, one of the most emblematic masonry domes in the

Hooping as an Ancient Remedy for Conservation of Large Masonry Domes

ABSTRACT The insertion of metal tie rods all around masonry domes, in order to hoop them and to absorb their horizontal thrusts, is the most ancient traditional strengthening technique for these

ON THE HOOPING OF LARGE MASONRY DOMES : DISCUSSION ON STRAIN MEASUREMENTS AND INTERACTION WITH MASONRY

The insertion of metal tie rods all around masonry domes, in order to hoop them and to absorb their horizontal thrusts, is the most ancient traditional strengthening technique for these fascinating

Graphical Modelling of Hoop Force Distribution for Equilibrium Analysis of Masonry Domes

The behaviour of axisymmetric masonry shells can be simulated by a system of forces constituted by meridian forces acting in the vertical planes, and by hoop forces acting circumferentially. A

Terrestrial laser scanning for the comprehensive structural health assessment of the Baptistery di San Giovanni in Florence, Italy: an integrative methodology for repeatable data acquisition, visualization and analysis

Abstract The ravages of time, natural and man-made disasters, pollution, fatigue, overexposure, mismanagement, and the unintended consequences of efforts to preserve our cultural patrimony, have all

Seismic Structural Health Monitoring of Cultural Heritage Structures

TLDR
This chapter reports a discussion about the methodological multi-disciplinary approach to SHM, with emphasis on vibration-based SHM techniques, as applied to architectural heritage buildings and structures, along with the description of selected case studies.

From "models" to "reality", and Return. Some Reflections on the Interaction Between Survey and Interpretative Methods for Built Heritage Conservation

TLDR
The goal of the present paper is to analyse the complex process of translation from the very precise information obtainable by the modern survey methodologies for historic buildings into the very simplified schemes used to understand their real structural behaviour, through empiricism.
