The Dark Triad consists of three overlapping but distinct personality variables: narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. To date, however, no research has empirically identified what leads these three variables to overlap or whether other variables share the same core. The present research addresses why and how dark personalities overlap. Drawing from classic work in psychopathy, Hare's Factor 1 or manipulation and callousness were found to be the common antagonistic core. A series of…

The "core" of the dark triad: A test of competing hypotheses.
TLDR
It is argued that the most parsimonious explanation for findings on the core of the DT is that such traits all fall under the umbrella of antagonism.
The Malevolent Side of Human Nature
TLDR
The findings show that dark triad traits are substantially intercorrelated, somewhat more prevalent among men than women, predominantly related to the Big Five personality factor of agreeableness and the HEXACO factor of honesty-humility, and generally associated with various types of negative psychosocial outcomes.
The Latent structure of the Dark Triad : unifying Machiavellianism and psychopathy
The Latent Structure of the Dark Triad: Unifying Machiavellianism and Psychopathy The Dark Triad (DT) has emerged as a popular extension to the extant literature on personality psychology. The DT is
The (mis)measurement of the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen: exploitation at the core of the scale
TLDR
The Dirty Dozen showed a consistent factor structure, a relatively convergent validity similar to that found in earlier studies, and imply that the core of the Dirty Dozens scale, a manipulative and anti-social trait, can be measured by a Single Item Dirty Dark Dyad (SIDDD).
Theoretical and empirical concerns regarding the dark triad as a construct.
TLDR
The authors provide empirical evidence from a large, correctional sample to demonstrate that a latent Dark Triad could not be estimated using confirmatory factor analysis because more than 100% of the variance was attributed to psychopathy.
The Malevolent Side of Human Nature: A Meta-Analysis and Critical Review of the Literature on the Dark Triad (Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy)
The term dark triad refers to the constellation of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Over the past few years, the concept has gained momentum, with many researchers assuming that the

Data were collected from two undergraduate student samples to examine (i) the relations of the ‘Dark Triad’ variables (Machiavellianism, Psychopathy, and Narcissism) with the HEXACO personality
Searching for a vulnerable dark triad: comparing Factor 2 psychopathy, vulnerable narcissism, and borderline personality disorder.
Paulhus and Williams (2002) identified a "Dark Triad" comprising the following related personality styles: narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. The heterogeneity found in narcissism and

The super-ordinate nature of the psychopathy checklist-revised.
TLDR
Structural equation modeling results indicated that the four first-order factor dimensions could be explained by a single second-order cohesive super-factor, which may reflect the unifying feature which comprehensively defines the disorder.
What Does the Narcissistic Personality Inventory Really Measure?
TLDR
The results suggest that researchers interested in the psychological and behavioral outcomes associated with the NPI should examine correlates at the facet level and propose a hierarchical model for the structure of the N PI.
