Abstract This paper records the history of the conservation of classical marble sculpture at the British Museum from the early nineteenth century until 1975, the year that a Department of Conservation was formed. In the nineteenth century the British Museum was very concerned about the effect of the polluled London air on its collectiolls; cleaning was carried out with soap solution assisted by 'mud' packs composed of clay or Fuller's earth.
