The molecular and isotopic composition of cometary ices provide key information on the chemical and physical properties of the outer solar nebula where comets formed, 4.6 Gyr ago. This paper presents our current knowledge of the volatile composition of cometary nuclei, based on spectroscopic observations and in situ measurements of parent molecules and noble gases in cometary comae.
