[Heinz Berke received his Diploma in Chemistry at the University of Erlangen, Germany. After having obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Tubingen, Germany, in 1974, he moved in the same year to the University of Konstanz, Germany, where he finished his habilitation thesis in 1981. In 1977 he had an intermediate stay as research associate at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA.
