We have combined new high-resolution spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST )a nd ground-based facilities to make a comprehensive new abundance analysis of the metal-poor, halo star BD +17 3248. We have detected the third r-process peak elements osmium, platinum, and (for the first time in a metal-poor star) gold, elements whose abundances can only be reliably determined using HST. Our observations illustrate a pattern seen in other similar halo stars with the abundances of the… Expand
Chemical Abundance Analysis of a Neutron-capture Enhanced Red Giant in the Bulge Plaut Field
We present chemical abundances for 27 elements ranging from oxygen to erbium in the metal-poor ([Fe/H] = –1.67) bulge red giant branch star 2MASS 18174532-3353235. The results are based on equivalentExpand
Chemical substructure in the Milky Way halo: A new population of old stars
We report the results of a coherent study of a new class of halo stars defined on the basis of the chemical compositions of three metal-poor objects (½Fe=H ’ 2) that exhibit unusually lowExpand
Taking Another Look: Light n-Capture Element Abundances in Metal-Poor Halo Stars
Elements are produced in stars through a variety of processes; some are well known, others are still the object of active research. The elements zirconium (Zr) and yttrium (Y) reside in the massExpand
A high-precision abundance analysis of the nuclear benchmark star HD 20
We present our chemical abundance investigation of the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-1.60 dex), r-process-enriched ([Eu/Fe]=0.73 dex) halo star HD 20 using novel and archival high-resolution spectra atExpand
We present new abundance determinations of neutron-capture elements Ge, Zr, Os, Ir, and Pt in a sample of 11 metal-poor (-3.1 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ -1.6) Galactic halo giant stars, based on Hubble SpaceExpand
New n-Capture Element Abundance Determinations in an r-Process Enriched Star
We report on new abundance determinations for the neutron-capture elements Cd I (Z=48), Lu II (Z = 71) and Os II (Z = 76) in the r-process enriched star BD + 17 3248. These abundances are derivedExpand
The Extremely Metal-poor, Neutron Capture-rich Star CS 22892-052: A Comprehensive Abundance Analysis
High-resolution spectra obtained with three ground-based facilities and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have been combined to produce a new abundance analysis of CS 22892-052, an extremelyExpand

Iron and neutron-capture element abundance variations in the globular cluster M2 (NGC 7089)
We present CN and CH indices and CaII triplet metallicities for 34 giant stars and chemical abundances for 33 elements in 14 giants in the globular cluster M2. Assuming the program stars are clusterExpand
Neutron-Capture Elements in the Very Metal Poor Star HD 122563*
We obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectroscopy for the very metal poor star HD 122563 with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. Previous studies have shownExpand

First Detection of Platinum, Osmium, and Lead in a Metal-Poor Halo Star: HD 126238
Using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have detected the very heavy elements osmium, platinum, and lead in the metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -1.7) giantExpand

New high-resolution, very high signal-to-noise spectra of ultra-metal-poor (UMP) giant stars HD 115444 and HD 122563 have been gathered with the High-Resolution Echelle Spectrometer of the McDonaldExpand
Extremely Metal-Poor Stars. II. Elemental Abundances and the Early Chemical Enrichment of The Galaxy*
We have obtained high-resolution spectra of 23 very metal-poor stars and present an abundance analysis for 19 of these for elements between Mg and Eu. The sample comprises roughly equal numbers ofExpand
Evidence of Multiple r-Process Sites in the Early Galaxy: New Observations of CS 22892-052.
The concordance of scaled solar r-process and CS 22892-052 abundances breaks down for the lighter neutron-capture elements, supporting previous suggestions that different r- process production sites are responsible for lighter and heavier neutron- capture elements. Expand
Neutron capture elements in s-process-rich, very metal-poor stars
We report abundance estimates for neutron capture elements, including lead (Pb), and nucleosynthesis models for their origin, in two carbon-rich, very metal-poor stars, LP 625-44 and LP 706-7. TheseExpand

Th Ages for Metal-poor Stars
With a sample of 22 metal-poor stars, we demonstrate that the heavy-element abundance pattern (Z ≥ 56) is the same as the r-process contributions to the solar nebula. This bolsters the results ofExpand
