The paper represents the first instalment of a series of about thirty planned studies on the whole corpus of biconsonantal Semitic 'roots'. The aim of these studies is, on the one hand, to identify such clusters as actual lexical units in the Semitic lexicon and, on other, to determine their productivity in terms of lexical expansions.
