The rise and fall of a nationwide network of political clubs, or "Jacobin societies," constituted one of the most dramatic chapters of the French Revolution. Four periods are discernible in the history of these clubs. The first begins in 1789 and ends with the "Feuillant schism" and the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, July 17-September 30, 1791.
