The Beginnings of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Particle Physics -- Derived From My on the Spot
@inproceedings{Guralnik2011TheBO, title={The Beginnings of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Particle Physics -- Derived From My on the Spot}, author={Gerald S. Guralnik}, year={2011} }
I summarize the development of the ideas of Spontaneous symmetry breaking in the 1960s with an outline of the Guralnik, Hagen, Kibble (GHK) paper and include comments on the relationship of this paper to those of Brout, Englert and Higgs. I include some pictures from my "physics family album which might be of some amusement value".

THE HISTORY OF THE GURALNIK, HAGEN AND KIBBLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEORY OF SPONTANEOUS SYMMETRY BREAKING AND GAUGE PARTICLES
- Physics
- 2009
I discuss historical material about the beginning of the ideas of spontaneous symmetry breaking and particularly the role of the paper by Guralnik, Hagen and Kibble in this development. I do so…
GAUGE INVARIANCE AND THE GOLDSTONE THEOREM
- Physics
- 2011
This paper was originally created for and printed in the "Proceedings of seminar on unified theories of elementary particles" held in Feldafing, Germany from July 5 to 16, 1965 under the auspices of…
Spontaneous Symmetry Breakdown without Massless Bosons
- Physics
- 2011
energy scattering requires these trajectories not to be associated with spin-zero particles. 2 This is by no means a drawback to our model; again, as in the case of the a n R.J.N. Phillips and W.…
Divergence of perturbation theory in quantum electrodynamics
- Physics
- 1952
An argument is presented which leads tentatively to the conclusion that all the power-series expansions currently in use in quantum electrodynamics are divergent after the renormalization of mass and…
Dynamical Model of Elementary Particles Based on an Analogy with Superconductivity
- Physics
- 2011
Continuing the program developed in a previous paper, a "superconductive" solution describing the proton-neutron doublet is obtained from a nonlinear spinor field Lagrangian. We Gnd the pions of…
CONNECTION BETWEEN GAUGE INVARIANCE AND MASS
- Physics, Mathematics
- 1962
S>The limit, as the bare mass vanishes, of a theory of a massive neutral vector meson interacting with charged fields is investigated. A redefinition of the charged-field operators is exhibited so…
Dynamical Model of Elementary Particles Based on an Analogy with Superconductivity. II
- Physics
- 1961
It is suggested that the nucleon mass arises largely as a self-energy of some primary fermion field through the same mechanism as the appearance of energy gap in the theory of superconductivity. The…
Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking and the Goldstone Theorem
- Physics
- 2011
So far we have concentrated on the chiral symmetry of the QCD Hamiltonian and the explicit symmetry breaking by the quark masses. We have discussed the importance of chiral symmetry for the…
