The Standard Model is the best tested and most widely accepted theory of elementary particles we have today. It may seem complicated and arbitrary, but it has hidden patterns that are revealed by the relationship between three ‘grand unied theories’: theories that unify forces and particles by extending the Standard Model symmetry group U(1) SU(2) SU(3) to a larger group. These three are Georgi and Glashow’s SU(5) theory, Georgi’s theory based on the group Spin(10), and the Pati{Salam model…

Unified theory in the worldline approach

- Physics, Mathematics
- 2015

We explore unified field theories based on the gauge groups SU(5) and SO(10) using the worldline approach for chiral fermions with a Wilson loop coupling to a background gauge field. Representing…

Recent work on neutrino oscillations suggests that the three generations of fermions in the standard model are related by representations of the finite group A(4), the group of symmetries of the…

Quaternion Octonion Reformulation of Grand Unified Theories

Three generations, two unbroken gauge symmetries, and one eight-dimensional algebra

- Physics, MathematicsPhysics Letters B
- 2018

Abstract A considerable amount of the standard model's three-generation structure can be realised from just the 8 C -dimensional algebra of the complex octonions. Indeed, it is a little-known fact…

Gauge Enhanced Quantum Criticality Between Grand Unifications: Categorical Higher Symmetry Retraction

- Physics, Mathematics
- 2021

Prior work [1] shows that the Standard Model (SM) naturally arises near a gapless quantum critical region between Georgi-Glashow (GG) su(5) and Pati-Salam (PS) su(4) × su(2) × su(2) models of quantum…
