The mammalian order Condylarthra includes a heterogeneous assemblage of smallto medium-sized archaic omnivores and herbivores. Most families in the order flourished in the Paleocene and became extinct early in the Eocene. A few lineages, however, developed crucial adaptations which led to their emergence as new orders of mammals, one of which was the Perissodactyla.
