We have used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 to explore the overall structure and substructure of the stellar halo of the Milky Way using ~4 million color-selected main-sequence turnoff stars with -->0.2 18.5 ? r 0.5 3.7 ? 1.2 ? 108 M?. The density profile of the stellar halo is approximately -->? r??, where ? -->2 > ? > ? 4. Yet, we found that all smooth and symmetric models were very poor fits to the distribution of stellar halo stars because the data exhibit a… Expand

Mapping the stellar structure of the Milky Way
We map the stellar structure of the Galaxy by applying color-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting to photometric data from the SEGUE survey allowing, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of MilkyExpand
The Origin of the Milky Way's Halo Age Distribution
We present an analysis of the radial age gradients for the stellar halos of five Milky Way mass-sized systems simulated as part of the Aquarius Project. The halos show a diversity of age trends,Expand
Stellar population variations in the Milky Way's stellar halo
If the stellar halos of disk galaxies are built up from the disruption of dwarf galaxies, models predict highly structured variations in the stellar populations within these halos. We test thisExpand

Abstract This study presents a tomographic survey of a subset of the outer halo (10–40 kpc) drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6. Halo substructure on spatial scales of >3 degreesExpand
The first all-sky view of the Milky Way stellar halo with Gaia+2MASS RR Lyrae
We exploit the first Gaia data release to study the properties of the Galactic stellar halo as traced by RR Lyrae. We demonstrate that it is possible to select a pure sample of RR Lyrae using onlyExpand
We identify 10?seven for the first time?elements of cold halo substructure (ECHOS) in the volume within 17.5 kpc of the Sun in the inner halo of the Milky Way. Our result is based on the observedExpand
Modelling the Milky Way – I. Method and first results fitting the thick disc and halo with DES-Y3 data
We present MWFitting, a method to fit the stellar components of the Galaxy by comparing Hess Diagrams (HDs) from TRILEGAL models to real data. We apply MWFitting to photometric data from the firstExpand
Structure and Kinematics of the Stellar Halos and Thick Disks of the Milky Way Based on Calibration Stars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7
The structure and kinematics of the recognized stellar components of the Milky Way are explored, based on well-determined atmospheric parameters and kinematic quantities for 32360 "calibration stars"Expand
The Milky Way’s stellar disk
A suite of vast stellar surveys mapping the Milky Way, culminating in the Gaia mission, is revolutionizing the empirical information about the distribution and properties of stars in the GalacticExpand
Quantifying Kinematic Substructure in the Milky Way's Stellar Halo
We present and analyze the positions, distances, and radial velocities for over 4000 blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the Milky Way's halo, drawn from SDSS DR8. We search for position-velocityExpand

The Milky Way's stellar halo - lumpy or triaxial?
We present minimum chi-squared fits of power law and Hernquist density profiles to F-turnoff stars in eight 2.5° wide stripes of SDSS data: five in the North Galactic Cap and three in the SouthExpand
Stellar Population Studies with the SDSS. I. The Vertical Distribution of Stars in the Milky Way
We present star count data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for 5.8 × 105 stars brighter than g' = 21 mag over 279 deg2 in two samples north and south of the Galactic plane. Using theseExpand
The Milky Way Tomography with SDSS. I. Stellar Number Density Distribution
Using the photometric parallax method we estimate the distances to ~48 million stars detected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and map their three-dimensional number density distribution in theExpand
Tracing Galaxy Formation with Stellar Halos. I. Methods
If the favored hierarchical cosmological model is correct, then the Milky Way system should have accreted 100– 200 luminous satellite galaxies in the past 12 Gyr. We model this process using aExpand
Hierarchical galaxy formation and substructure in the Galaxy's stellar halo
We develop an explicit model for the formation of the stellar halo from tidally disrupted, accreted dwarf satellites in the cold dark matter (CDM) framework, focusing on predictions testable with theExpand
The Overdensity in Virgo, Sagittarius Debris, and the Asymmetric Spheroid
We investigate the relationship between several previously identified Galactic halo stellar structures in the direction of Virgo using imaging and spectroscopic observations of F turnoff stars andExpand
The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: star counts and the structure of the Galactic stellar halo
We derive a star catalogue generated from the images taken as part of the 37.5 deg 2 Millennium Galaxy Catalogue. These data, alone and together with colours gained from the Sloan Digital SkyExpand
Identification of a-colored stars and structure in the halo of the Milky Way from Sloan digital sky survey commissioning data
A sample of 4208 objects with magnitude 15 < g* < 22 and colors of main-sequence A stars have been selected from 370 deg2 of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) commissioning observations. The data isExpand
A Prescription for Building the Milky Way's Halo from Disrupted Satellites
We develop a semianalytic method for determining the phase-space population of tidal debris along the orbit of a disrupting satellite galaxy and illustrate its use with a number of applications. WeExpand
The asymmetric structure of the Galactic halo
Using the stellar photometry catalogue based on the latest data release (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), a study of the Galactic structure using star counts is carried out for selectedExpand
