Dementia in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is ultimately due to cell loss mediated by several mechanisms including, apoptosis, impaired mitochondrial function, and possibly necrosis. A second major neuroanatomic correlate of dementia is aberrant cortical neuritic sprouting with abundant proliferation of dystrophic neurites.
