The length of the three-dimensional filaments observed in the fourth public data-release of the SDSS is measured using the {\em local skeleton} method. It consists in defining the set of points where the gradient of the smoothed density field is extremal along its isocontours, with some additional constraints on local curvature to probe actual ridges in the galaxy distribution. A good fit to the mean filament length per unit volume, $\cal{L}$, in the SDSS survey is found to be ${\cal{L}}=(52500…
The three dimensional skeleton: tracing the filamentary structure of the universe
The skeleton formalism aims at extracting and quantifying the filamentary structure of the universe is generalized to 3D density fields; a numerical method for computating a local approximation of
The primordial non-Gaussianity of local type (flocalNL) in the WMAP 5-year data: the length distribution of CMB skeleton
We present skeleton studies of non-Gaussianity in the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy observed in the 5-yr Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data. The local skeleton is
Recovering the topology of the IGM at z~2
We investigate how well the 3D density field of neutral hydrogen in the Intergalactic Medium (IGM) can be reconstructed using the Lyman-alpha absorptions observed along lines of sight to quasars
On the Onset of Stochasticity inCDM Cosmological Simulations
The onset of stochasticity is measured inCDM cosmological simulations using a set of clas- sical observables. It is quantified as the local derivative o f the logarithm of the dispersion of a given
The Geometry of Nonparametric Filament Estimation
We consider the problem of estimating filamentary structure from d-dimensional point process data. We make some connections with computational geometry and develop nonparametric methods for
On the onset of stochasticity in Λ cold dark matter cosmological simulations
The onset of stochasticity is measured in A cold dark matter cosmological simulations using a set of classical observables. It is quantified as the local derivative of the logarithm of the dispersion
On the path density of a gradient field
TLDR
This work considers the problem of reliably finding filaments in point clouds by constructing the steepest ascent path along a kernel density estimator, and proposes a consistent estimator of this path density.
A three‐dimensional object point process for detection of cosmic filaments
Summary.  We propose to apply an object point process to delineate filaments of the large scale structure in red shift catalogues automatically. We illustrate the feasibility of the idea on an
