The translational activation of several maternal mRNAs in Xenopus laevis is dependent on cytoplasmic poly(A) elongation. Messages harboring the UUUUUAU-type cytoplasmic polyadenylation element (CPE) in their 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) undergo polyadenylation and translation during oocyte maturation.
