The immunomodulating effects of various gel-forming (1-->3)-beta-glucans, grifolan (GRN), SSG, sonifilan (SPG) and alkaline-treated SPG (SPG-OH), on balancing helper T cell activity were examined in a murine model. Plasma from mice that were injected with GRN or SPG-OH and trinitrophenyl ovalbumin (TNP-OVA) contained TNP-specific antibodies of both IgG1 and IgG2a isotypes. Administration of SSG and TNP-OVA significantly augmented the synthesis of IgG2a antibodies, while the synthesis of IgG1… Expand
Oral β-glucan adjuvant therapy converts nonprotective Th 2 response to protective Th 1 cell-mediated immune response in mammary tumor-bearing mice
Beta (1-3)-D-glucans were identified almost 40 years ago as biological response modifiers that stimulated tumor rejection. In vitro studies have shown that β-glucans bind to a lectin domain withinExpand
Oral beta-glucan adjuvant therapy converts nonprotective Th2 response to protective Th1 cell-mediated immune response in mammary tumor-bearing mice.
TLDR
The intracellular cytokine profiles of peripheral blood lymphocytes from mice bearing mammary tumors receiving i.v. anti-tumor mAbs combined or not with whole glucan particle suspension given orally (WGP, 400 microg every 24 hours) were assessed. Expand
Pacific oyster-derived polysaccharides enhance antigen-specific T helper (Th)1 immunity in vitro and in vivo
TLDR
It is demonstrated that OPS modulated antigen-specific T cell responses, including antigen-induced splenocyte proliferation and T-cell cytokine expression, which may be attributed to the up-regulation of Th1 cell development. Expand
Role of soluble β-(1-3),(1-6)-D-glucan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the murine P388 ascites tumor model.
BACKGROUND Therapeutic options for the treatment of malignant ascites are limited and could be broadened by immune-stimulatory drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Soluble β-(1-3),(1-6)-D-glucan fromExpand
β-Glucan enhancement of T cell IFNγ response in swine
TLDR
It is found that soluble high molecular weight β-glucan could increase IFNγ-producing cell frequency in a dose-dependent manner in the enzyme-linked immunospot assay (ELISPOT) in the absence of antigenic restimulation. Expand

TLDR
CAIBG has strong treatment potential in combating tumor growth and prolonging survival time of S180 tumor-bearing mice and combined use of CAIBG and CTX can compensate the CTX-induced immunosuppression and provide antitumor effects. Expand
Antimetastatic effect of an immunomodulatory arabinomannan extracted from Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain Aoyama B, Z-100, through the production of interleukin-12.
TLDR
The results indicate that IL-12 is essentially required for the appearance of the antimetastatic effect of Z-100, which is related to the improvement of Th1/Th2 cell responses from the Th2-dominant state to the normal state, which resulted in suppression of tumor metastasis. Expand
A study on immunomodulating beta-glucan: Effects of oral application on inflammation, tissue injury, and the mucosal immune system in experimental animals
TLDR
A beneficial effect of oral SBG administration on key parameters in experimental UC is demonstrated and it is proposed that SBG have a potential as a therapeutic agent in future IBD management. Expand
Effects of α-glucans from Agaricus bisporus on ex vivo cytokine production by LPS and PHA-stimulated PBMCs; a placebo-controlled study in slightly hypercholesterolemic subjects
TLDR
In vivo, α-glucans have lost their efficacy to stimulate the immune response as observed in the authors' in vitro mouse model, and a trend towards a decreased production of IL-12 and IL-10 is observed. Expand
Medicinal importance of fungal -(1?3), (1?6)-glucans
TLDR
Non-cellulosic β-glucans are now recognized as potent immunological activators, and some are used clinically in China and Japan, where they are effective in treating diseases like cancer, a range of microbial infections, hypercholesterolaemia, and diabetes. Expand

Enhancement of cytokine production by macrophages stimulated with (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan, grifolan (GRN), isolated from Grifola frondosa.
TLDR
GRN is a novel macrophage activator which augments cytokine production without dependence on endotoxins, and was more effective than LPS used in this study. Expand
Adjuvant effect of grifolan on antibody production in mice.
TLDR
It is suggested that GRN can enhance antibody production and that NO induced by stimulation with GRN concomitantly with antibody production is a negative factor on the adjuvant activity. Expand
Cytokine-related immunopotentiating activities of paramylon, a beta-(1-->3)-D-glucan from Euglena gracilis.
TLDR
Paramylon markedly enhanced anti-SRBC plaque-forming cell production at a dose of 10 mg/kg and in vitro addition of lipopolysaccharide in culture to macrophages from paramylon-treated mice produced a large amount of IL-1 and there was a significant level of interleukin 6 induced transiently in the blood of these mice. Immunomodulation by orally administered β-glucan in mice
TLDR
It is demonstrated that SSG can potentiate the immune response of mice following oral administration and significant inhibition of tumor growth was observed in syngeneic tumor systems when SSG was administered directly after tumor implantation. Expand
Change of biological activities of (1----3)-beta-D-glucan from Grifola frondosa upon molecular weight reduction by heat treatment.
TLDR
The results suggest that an antitumor glucan is not always a multiple enhancer of host defense mechanisms and that a large molecular weight is required to augment multiple immunological activities. Expand

It is suggested that NO productivity of β-glucans in vivo is regulated by several mechanisms. Expand
Effects of IL-12 on helper T cell-dependent immune responses in vivo.
TLDR
The results suggest that the effects of IL-12 may be mediated both via NK cell stimulation and by directly altering the differentiation patterns of T cells, indicating that IL- 12 may play an obligatory role in Ag-induced Th1 differentiation in vivo. Expand

TLDR
The procedure for the differential selection of TH1 and TH2 clones reactive with the same Ag should be useful for designing in vitro systems for studying the function of these cell subsets in specific immune responses. Expand
