Tetracyclines (TCN) were introduced in 1948 as broad‐spectrum antibiotics that may be used in the treatment of many common infections in children and adults. One of the side‐effects of tetracyclines is incorporation into tissues that are calcifying at the time of their administration. They have the ability to chelate calcium ions and to be incorporated into teeth, cartilage and bone, resulting in discoloration of both the primary and permanent dentitions. This permanent discoloration varies…
A Minimally Invasive Management Approach to Tetracycline Staining of Adult Dentition
TLDR
This case report suggests minimally invasive strategies to manage tetracycline staining in adult dentition by exploring whether continuous exposure to the sun might lead to the formation of oxidation product and lead to discoloration.
Minocycline induced black bone disease: an incidental finding during total shoulder arthroplasty
TLDR
In the current orthopaedic literature, there have been no reports of minocycline-induced black bone disease of the glenohumeral joint and short-term retrospective follow-up on reported cases has not shown a difference in intraoperative bone quality or clinical or radiographic outcomes during follow- up.
Mechanisms of Staining with Demeclocycline and Doxycycline Root Canal Medicaments
TLDR
Staining during dark storage and enhanced staining on exposure to light were reported, indicating multiple pathways of degradation of demeclocycline and its reaction products, and laboratory assessments of the potential for staining should replicate in vivo conditions.
Tigecycline-Induced Tooth Discoloration in Children Younger than Eight Years

TLDR
The incidence and extent of tigecycline-associated dental adverse events remain unclear due to the small sample size and inadequate follow-up period.
Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis triggered by intake of herbal medications
TLDR
The first case of blue-black discoloration developed within depressed acne scars following tetracycline/ doxycycline therapy for acne is reported, which indicates that other derivatives of tetrACYclines can induce the same type of pigmentation.
Rusty green stained temporal bone associated with exposure to tetracycline: an unusual presentation of black bone disease
TLDR
Tissue and organ pigmentation is an unexpected and unfavourable consequence of the use of tetracyclines, particularly minocycline, in children because of the risk for dysosteogenesis and enamel hypoplasia.
Feeling blue? Minocycline-induced staining of the teeth, oral mucosa, sclerae and ears – a case report
TLDR
If patients already have concerns about their appearance due to an unsightly skin condition, careful consideration ought to be given to using minocycline as it could worsen the status quo, should potentially irreversible blue staining occur.
Root discolouration following short-term application of steroid medicaments containing clindamycin, doxycycline or demeclocycline.

  • 2012
TLDR
Under zero light conditions, staining with Ledermix can still occur; indicating non-light-based chemical reactions in the staining process and Doxycycline containing intra-canal medicaments caused less staining despite being a tetracycline-based medicament.
Flawless Smile with Zirconia Crowns for Tetracycline Stained Teeth
Tetracycline is one of the teratogenic antibiotics used in various infections affecting both adults and children, has a side effect of staining teeth because of its ability to form a tetracycline
Herbs: An Adjunctive Treatment for Periodontitis
TLDR
The herbal extracts have the potential to be developed as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis, and anti-inflammatory activity of herbal extracts has been reported in periodontal cell cultures.

THE PREVALENCE OF TETRACYCLINE STAINING IN ERUPTED TEETH
TLDR
The most recently published study is that of Brearley et alii (1968), in which the prevalence of tetracycline tooth staining and hypoplasia was reported in three groups of Melbourne children.
Tetracycline and staining of the teeth.
To the Editor.— In their recent article on minocycline staining of already erupted permanent teeth, Poliak et al 1 state that tetracycline stains teeth only when it is administered before the age of
The incidence of staining of permanent teeth by the tetracyclines.
TLDR
As staining was seen at all dosage levels, whatever the duration, physicians should continue to follow previous advice and prescribe other antibiotics where possible for children under 8 years of age or for women in the last trimester of pregnancy.
Dental and oral discolorations associated with minocycline and other tetracycline analogs.
TLDR
The most common patterns of minocycline staining are presented in addition to comparing the staining patterns of other tetracycline analogs in the permanent dentition to highlight useful ways to treat or prevent these discolorations.
Staining and hypoplasia of enamel caused by tetracycline: case report.
TLDR
This is a case report of enamel hypoplasia and staining presumably caused byahigh dosage of'tetracy'dines in childhood, and the presence of yellow fluorescence of teeth was a reliable method of diagnosing exposure to the drug during the period of odontogenesis.
The Effect of the Administration of Tetracycline on the Development of Teeth
Several investigators1-0 have shown that the tetracyclines complex with several metallic ions. It has also been shown that tetracycline or a fluorophore of this drug is incorporated into growing
Minocycline-induced intraoral pharmacogenic pigmentation: case reports and review of the literature.
TLDR
If minocycline use becomes widespread as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, it is likely that more practitioners will be asked to diagnose this sometimes striking, though apparently benign, condition.
Tooth discoloration resulting from long-term tetracycline therapy: a case report.
TLDR
The possibility that discoloration from tetracycline may not be limited to tooth development in the child, but may also affect the adult dentition is suggested.

Discoloration of permanent front teeth in 3,157 Norwegian children due to tetracyclines and other factors.
TLDR
During routine orthodontic screening in Oslo, Norway, of 3,157 children, aged 1--11 years and born in 1963/64, 36 cases with cosmetically marring discoloration of permanent front teeth were registered, which in 24 of the children revealed positive tetracycline fluorescence on exposure to ultraviolet light.
