Previous reports from this laboratory indicate that the 5 alpha-reductase, the enzyme which converts testosterone into its "active" metabolite 5 alpha-androstan-17 beta-ol-3-one (dihydrotestosterone, DHT) is highly concentrated in the white matter structures of the CNS, which are mainly composed of myelinated fibers.
