It was predicted more than 40 years ago that the cores of the coolest white dwarf stars should eventually crystallize. This effect is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in white dwarf cooling models, which are now routinely used to estimate the ages of stellar populations in both the Galactic disk and the Galactic halo. We are attempting to minimize this source of uncertainty by calibrating the models, using observations of pulsating white dwarfs. In a typical mass white dwarf model… Expand
Latest generation white dwarf cooling models : theory and applications
White dwarfs are the most common stellar evolutionary end-point. Moreover, they can be considered as reliable cosmic clocks to infer the age of a wide variety of stellar populations, includingExpand

New evolutionary models for massive ZZ Ceti stars - II. The effects of crystallization on their pulsational properties

Pulsating white dwarfs: new insights
Stars are extremely important astronomical objects that constitute the pillars on which the Universe is built, and as such, their study has gained increasing interest over the years. White dwarfExpand
New chemical profiles for the asteroseismology of ZZ Ceti stars
We compute new chemical profiles for the core and envelope of white dwarfs appropriate for pulsational studies of ZZ Ceti stars. These profiles are extracted from the complete evolution of progenitorExpand
THE PHYSICS OF CRYSTALLIZATION FROM GLOBULAR CLUSTER WHITE DWARF STARS IN NGC 6397

Whole Earth Telescope observations of BPM 37093: A seismological test of crystallization theory in white dwarfs
BPM 37093 is the only hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarf currently known which has sufficient mass (~1.1 $M_\odot$) to theoretically crystallize while still inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip ($T_{\rmExpand
Asteroseismology of ZZ Ceti stars with full evolutionary white dwarf models: II. The impact of AGB thermal pulses on the asteroseismic inferences of ZZ Ceti stars
The thermally pulsing phase on the asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) is the last nuclear burning phase experienced by most of low and intermediate mass stars. During this phase, the outer chemicalExpand
The evolution of ultra-massive white dwarfs
Ultra-massive white dwarfs are powerful tools used to study various physical processes in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), type Ia supernova explosions, and the theory of crystallization throughExpand
Pulsation properties of ultra-massive DA white dwarf stars with ONe cores
Context. Ultra-massive hydrogen-rich white dwarf stars are expected to harbor oxygen/neon cores resulting from the progenitor evolution through the super-asymptotic giant branch phase. As evolutionExpand
