In preparation for extending the JOREK nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code to stellarators, a hierarchy of stellarator-capable reduced and full MHD models has been derived and tested. The derivation was presented at the EFTC 2019 conference. Continuing this line of work, we have implemented the reduced MHD model (Nikulsin et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 26, 2019, 102109) as well as an alternative model which was newly derived using a different set of projection operators for obtaining the…

Approach to nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulations in stellarator geometry

The capability to model the nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) evolution of stellarator plasmas is developed by extending the M3D-C 1 code to allow non-axisymmetric domain geometry. We introduce a

Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic modeling of current-drive-induced sawtooth-like crashes in the W7-X stellarator

Sawtooth-like core electron temperature crashes have been observed in W7-X experiments with electron cyclotron current drive. We present nonlinear single-fluid magnetohydrodynamic simulations of this

Nonlinear MHD simulations of external kinks in quasi-axisymmetric stellarators using an axisymmetric external rotational transform approximation

Reduced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are used to study the nonlinear dynamics of external kinks in a quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator with varying fractions of external rotational

Magnetic reconnection in 3D fusion devices: non-linear reduced equations and linear current-driven instabilities

Magnetic reconnection in 3D fusion devices is investigated. With the use of Boozer co-ordinates, we reduce the non-linear resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations in the limit of large aspect ratio

The JOREK non-linear extended MHD code and applications to large-scale instabilities and their control in magnetically confined fusion plasmas

JOREK is a massively parallel fully implicit non-linear extended magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) code for realistic tokamak X-point plasmas. It has become a widely used versatile simulation code for

Extended full-MHD simulation of non-linear instabilities in tokamak plasmas

Non-linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations play an essential role in active research and understanding of tokamak plasmas for the realization of a fusion power plant. The development of MHD

A three-dimensional reduced MHD model consistent with full MHD

Within the context of a viscoresistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with anisotropic heat transport and cross-field mass diffusion, we introduce novel three-term representations for the magnetic

Reduced, approximate MHD equations are derived for the case where the magnetic field is close to a potential field. The potential field can have an arbitrary three-dimensional structure, as long as

Multiple timescale calculations of sawteeth and other global macroscopic dynamics of tokamak plasmas

The M3D-C1 (Breslau et al 2009 Phys. Plasmas 16 092503) code is designed for performing three-dimensional nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) calculations of a tokamak plasma that span the

Non-linear saturation of the internal kink mode

A numerical study shows that in a cylindrical tokamak the internal kink mode (m = 1) develops non-linearly into a helical equilibrium state that possesses a singular current sheet. In the

Some properties of the M3D-C1 form of the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics equations

A set of scalar variables and projection operators for the vector momentum and magnetic field evolution equations is presented that has several unique and desirable properties, making it a preferred
