Microvariability consists in small time scale variations of low amplitude in the photometric light curves of quasars, and represents an important tool to investigate their inner core. Detection of quasar microvariations is challenging for their non-periodicity, as well as the need for high monitoring frequency and high signal-to-noise ratio. Statistical tests developed for the analysis of quasar differential light curves usually show either low power or low reliability, or both. In this paper…

Optical Variability of a Newly Discovered Blazar Sample from the BZCAT Catalog
In an optical monitoring program to characterize the variability properties of blazars, we observed 10 sources from the Roma-BZCAT catalog for 26 nights in V and R bands during 2014 October to 2015
Optical Flux and Spectral Variability of the TeV Blazar PG 1553+113
We present the results of our optical (VRI) observations of the TeV blazar PG 1553+113 over eight nights in 2016 April. We monitored the blazar quasi-simultaneously in V and R bands each night and
Nature of intranight optical variability of BL Lacertae
We present the results of extensive multiband intranight optical monitoring of BL Lacertae during 2010-2012. BL Lacertae was very active in this period and showed intense variability in almost all
Optical Variability of the TeV Blazar 1ES 0806+524 on Diverse Timescales
We report the results of our optical (VRI) photometric observations of the TeV blazar 1ES 0806$+$524 on 153 nights during 2011-2019 using seven optical telescopes in Europe and Asia. We investigated
Optical variability of three extreme TeV blazars
We present the results of optical photometric observations of three extreme TeV blazars, 1ES 0229$+$200, 1ES 0414$+$009, and 1ES 2344$+$514, taken with two telescopes (1.3 m Devasthal Fast Optical
Microvariability in BL Lacertae: “Zooming” into the Innermost Blazar Regions
In this work, we present the results of our multi-band microvariability study of the famous blazar BL Lac. We performed microvariablity observations of the source in the optical VRI bands for four
Intra-night Optical Variability Monitoring of Fermi Blazars: First Results from 1.3 m J. C. Bhattacharya Telescope
We report the first results obtained from our campaign to characterize the intranight-optical variability (INOV) properties of {\it Fermi}~detected blazars, using the observations from the recently
Intra-night optical variability characteristics of different classes of narrow-line seyfert 1 galaxies
In a first systematic effort to characterize the intra-night optical variability (INOV) of different classes of narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies, we have carried out observations on a sample of
Multi-Wavelength Intra-Day Variability and Quasi-Periodic Oscillation in Blazars
We reviewed multi-wavelength blazars variability and detection of quasi-periodic oscillations on intra-day timescales. The variability timescale from a few minutes to up to less than a days is
Multi-Band Intra-Night Optical Variability of BL Lacertae
We monitored BL Lacertae frequently during 2014–2016 when it was generally in a high state. We searched for intra-day variability for 43 nights using quasi-simultaneous measurements in the B, V, R,

On the Reliability of Microvariability Tests in Quasars
Microvariations probe the physics and internal structure of quasars. Unpredictability and small flux variations make this phenomenon elusive and difficult to detect. Variance-based probes such as the
Literature on optical and infrared microvariability in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) reflects a diversity of statistical tests and strategies to detect tiny variations in the light curves of these
Optical microvariability properties of BALQSOs
We present optical light curves of 19 radio-quiet (RQ) broad absorption line (BAL) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and study their rapid variability characteristics. Systematic CCD observations, aided
We present results of a search for optical mi- crovariability in a selected sample of 23 southern AGNs, which includes both radio-quiet and radio-loud objects. Microvariations were clearly detected
A Comparative Study of the Microvariability Properties in Radio-loud and Radio-quiet Quasars
We have performed photometric optical observations of a sample of 17 core-dominated radio-loud quasars (CRLQs) and 17 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). The aims were to confirm the existence of
We present the results of an optical multiband (BVR) photometric monitoring program of 22 core-dominated radio-loud quasars (CRLQs) and 22 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). The aim was to compare the
Simulated Performance of Timescale Metrics for Aperiodic Light Curves
Aperiodic variability is a characteristic feature of young stars, massive stars, and active galactic nuclei. With the recent proliferation of time domain surveys, it is increasingly essential to
Intranight optical monitoring of optically selected bright quasars
As part of an ongoing programme to search for intranight optical variations, we report results for six radio-quiet and one radio-moderate, but all optically bright and luminous, quasi-stellar objects
Intranight optical variability of radio‐quiet and radio lobe‐dominated quasars
We present results of a programme of multi-epoch, intranight optical monitoring of a sample of non-blazar-type active galactic nuclei (AGN), which includes seven radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and an
Statistical error analysis in CCD time-resolved photometry with applications to variable stars and quasars
Differential photometric time series obtained from CCD frames are tested for intrinsic variability using a newly developed analysis of variance technique. In general, the objects used for
