Abstract: The use of a drug to modify a person’s behavior for criminal gain is not a recent phenomenon. However, the recent increase in reports of drug-facilitated crimes (sexual assault, robbery) has caused alarm in the general public. Drugs involved can be pharmaceuticals such as benzodiazepines (flunitrazepam, lorazepam, etc), hypnotics (zopiclone, zolpidem), sedatives (neuroleptics, some histamine H1 antagonists), or anesthetics (γ-hydroxybutyrate, ketamine), drugs of abuse such as cannabis… Expand
Drug-facilitated sexual assault and analytical toxicology: the role of LC-MS/MS A case involving zolpidem.
TLDR
A case involving a 23-year old girl that declared a sexual assault 6 days after the event was said to have occurred, to the Police, the victim claimed a total amnesia of the offense associated with intense sedation. Expand
Chemical Abuse in the Elderly: Evidence From Hair Analysis
TLDR
Hair analysis may be a useful adjunct to conventional drug testing in sexual assault, and mass spectrometry/mass spectromaetry technologies appear to be required for analyses in drug-facilitated cases. Expand
Hair to document drug-facilitated crimes: four cases involving bromazepam.
TLDR
Hair analysis was applied to four authentic criminal cases and found that concentrations were consistent with a single exposure to bromazepam. Expand
Identification of alprazolam in hair in two cases of drug-facilitated incidents.
TLDR
Hair testing by LC-MS/MS recorded two cases involving alprazolam (Xanax), an anxiolytic benzodiazepine, obtained from an adolescent who had been forced to prostitute herself and a 12-year-old girl, assaulted by her father who had sedated her three or four times. Expand
Identification of Acepromazine in Hair: An Illustration of the Difficulties Encountered in Investigating Drug‐facilitated Crimes
TLDR
A potential short elimination half‐life in humans and/or the well‐known in vitro degradation of acepromazine could explain the negative blood result after a drug‐facilitated sexual assault. Expand
Windows of Detection of Tetrazepam in Urine, Oral Fluid, Beard, and Hair, With a Special Focus on Drug-Facilitated Crimes
TLDR
In cases of drug-facilitated crimes in which tetrazepam is involved, hair and beard analyses can be an important complement to urine analyses to document exposure, particularly if LC-MS/MS is used. Expand
Drug testing in hair
TLDR
The aim of this chapter is to document toxicological applications of hair analysis in drug detection, and to suggest that hair analysis may be a useful adjunct to conventional drug testing in urine. Expand
Drug-facilitated crimes . Evidence by hair analysis
Introduction In the last few years, considerable information about drug-facilitated crimes (rape, sexual assault, robbery, sedation of persons) has accumulated. In these situations, the victims areExpand
Hair Analysis for Drug Detection
TLDR
The aim of this review is to document toxicological applications of hair analysis in drug detection, and to suggest that hair analysis may be a useful adjunct to conventional drug testing in urine. Expand
Windows of detection of lorazepam in urine, oral fluid and hair, with a special focus on drug-facilitated crimes.
TLDR
Urine appears as the best specimen to document exposure, particularly if LC-MS/MS is used in case of drug-facilitated crimes involving lorazepam, and despite a limit of quantitation at 1 pg/mg, the authors were unable to detect a single lorzepam dose in hair, contrarily to most other benzodiazepines that are detectable. Forensic urinalysis of drug use in cases of alleged sexual assault.
TLDR
The extensive forensic database examined here does not support the concept of a commonly occurring 'date rape' scenario, in which the victim's drink is covertly 'spiked' with a tablet, capsule or powder containing a sedative-hypnotic. Expand
Testing for GHB in hair by GC/MS/MS after a single exposure. Application to document sexual assault.
TLDR
This study demonstrates that a single exposure to GHB in a case of sexual assault can be documented by hair analysis when collected about one month after the crime. Expand
Detection of thiopental and pentobarbital in head and pubic hair in a case of drug-facilitated sexual assault.
TLDR
Analytical findings from hair revealed the use of the anaesthetic agent thiopental to sedate the victim quickly and deeply and commit sexual assault. Expand
Deposition of 7-aminoflunitrazepam and flunitrazepam in hair after a single dose of Rohypnol.
TLDR
To determine whether flunitrazepam and its major metabolite 7-aminoflunitsepam could be detected in hair collected from ten healthy volunteers after receiving a single 2 mg dose of Rohypnol using solid phase extraction and NCI-GC-MS, and to determine the best time interval for hair collection from a victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault, is studied. Expand
Deposition of 7-aminoclonazepam and clonazepam in hair following a single dose of Klonopin.
TLDR
7-ACLO was detected in hair of 6 out of 10 volunteers and was of great importance to law enforcement agencies trying to determine the best time interval for hair collection from a victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) in order to reveal drug use. Expand
Recommendations for toxicological investigations of drug-facilitated sexual assaults.
TLDR
Recommendations and guidelines are developed to inform law enforcement, medical, and scientific personnel of the requirements for performing successful toxicological examinations in cases of drug-facilitated rape. Expand
Incorporation of isotopically labeled cocaine and metabolites into human hair: 1. dose-response relationships.
TLDR
Hair analysis using GC-MS appears to be a very sensitive method for detecting cocaine ingestion, however, within the range of doses used in the present study, hair does not provide a particularly accurate record of either the amount, time, or duration of drug use. Expand
Codeine disposition in human hair after single and multiple doses
TLDR
A portion of the codeine remains bound as the hair grows and can be detected in distal hair for up to 10 weeks after a single dose, suggesting codeine is rapidly distributed into the germanitive elements of hair in a dose-proportional manner. Expand
