HYCANTHONE methanesulphonate, a drug believed to be effective in the treatment of schistosomiasis, is being administered to many individuals in Africa and Brazil during extensive field studies (therapeutic doses are 3–4 mg/kg). Studies have shown that hycanthone is mutagenic in bacterial1 and mammalian cell2 systems.
